Quiet on 6/25

No protesters at '9/11' opening

By Joseph Lord

HERALD-LEADER STAFF WRITER

As evident from his Fahrenheit 9/11, filmmaker Michael Moore doesn't support President Bush. And moviegoers who saw the first showings of Fahrenheit in Lexington generally thought likewise.

The controversial film, which generated rumors of protests locally, opened yesterday afternoon at the Kentucky Theater to a predominantly anti-Bush crowd.

No protesters showed up. Meanwhile, supporters of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry signed up campaign volunteers during the afternoon showing.*

*that was our group, KerryWinsKentucky.

there was good TV coverage, though they seemed disappointed that there were no protesters.

1. No coverage in our rag
The Bryan-College Station Eagle - often referred to as the the Daily Buzzard since it usually relies on the kills of other news services - has nothing to report.

My 79 year old WWII veteran Dad and I will be attending the 10:30 AM showing of F/9/11 this morning. I bought the tickets yesterday and there was a video crew setting up to catch people coming out. I don't know what station the represented, they got out of unmarked cars as I was walking up.

I'm just amazed that this film is showing in Freeperville, Texas. I know there is a progressive element here but in the past we have been overwhelmed by the ultra conservative element at Texas A and M.

4. Hey Coop!
At least you get to see it without having to wait or drive 100 miles. They aren't playing it in Victoria, TX. But I understand your sentiments: CS is about the most freepy place, even in Texas.

3. Greetings From the Left End of the Commonwealth
There's nothing to report concerning my local paper's coverage of F-9/11, I'm sad to say. I'm just glad that the only theater owner in town decided to show the film at all.

As an aside, I'm interested in your group, KerryWinsKentucky. I'm going to Google it as soon as I post this.

5. Ohio: Dayton Daily News

"Fahrenheit 9/11 One Hot Ticket"

Excerpt:

Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 is the hottest ticket in town.

The controversial documentary opened Friday to a long line of people stretched down St. Clair Street, waiting to see the film at the Neon Movies in Dayton.

The theater sold more than 250 tickets in less than an hour for both matinee and evening shows, manager Jonathan McNeal said. The 7:20 p.m. show was sold out by 12:45. One Dayton man bought 30 tickets, enough for most of his friends.

"It's been a while since we've had a packed house," McNeal said. "And a packed house seven hours before the screening is nice." All four of Friday's showings were sold out by 6 p.m., and a sign on the door told patrons without tickets that the box office would reopen today just before noon.
