Am I the only American who didn't see *'s limo pelted with eggs?
I was stunned last night (F9/11) to see the footage of all the protesters at the inaugural, the motorcade having to high-tail it down the street to escpae the throngs of people throwing eggs, protest signs galore, etc. NONE of this made the mainstream media as far as I remember or was I too much in a funk to notice?

Will the media cover the NYC protests during the convention? Will protests even be allowed? What country IS this?

1. No, that stunned me too
He is the only president who wasn't able to get out of the limo
and walk to where he was going to be sworn in.

Our little chimpy has so many "firsts" on his resume.

I was stunned in a pleased way by the number of protesters there and the brutal honesty of their signs.

8. He did eventually get out and walk down the street....
I remember it cuz he was wearing a coat that looked like it had two layers of Kevlar since it was so bulky looking. The chimp looked really weird walking down the street wearing that thing.

I thought I heard MM's voiceover say he didn't walk....

or maybe he just shortened the walk so he wouldn't have to pass any of the protestors.

Rex Reed made the astute observation that * is the first president in history to forgo that historic walk, and had to sneak into the White House via the back door.

I don't know much about Rex Reed, but I watched the Inauguration in horror, and remember the details.

...'cause his history is sure lacking. Or maybe Mr. Reed would like to tell us how far FDR strolled down Pennsylvania Avenue.

Jimmy Carter was the one who broke precedent by walking to the White House from the Capitol.

34. Oh christ... FDR

yeah, I'm sure that he didn't stroll down anything.

He suffered from Polio and was, by and large, confined to a wheelchair.

People mostly ignored it, and there was a lot of stagecraft to
not photograph him using it.

Good of you to bring him up.

He was a REAL war president.

Isn't it interesting that the mainstream media saw fit to spare the American public that sight. Just more confirmation of my deeply held belief that our news is pretty tightly controlled.

9. I READ about it in 2003
but I never heard or saw anything about it at the time. Of course I also watched NONE of his inauguration coverage, I was too disgusted.

But I read the paper religiously and I never remember reading anything about protestors or eggs or his motorcade having to go quickly, etc.

I read about all of it in the _I Hate Republicans Reader_ two years later.

10. I remember the part about the limo being pelted with eggs but it was
downplayed. I had no idea and I was angriest at that moment in the film. I had no idea so many people were on the street. If we had just had honest media then. The Joint Session with Al Gore was incredibly difficult as well.

Will this stun our media, our press, into being the guardians of democracy they were meant to be, yet?

12. I know a lot of people missed it because who wanted to watch
his parade? I just happened to tune into C-Span and watched it. I wanted to see if he was going to walk. There had been a lot of conversation beforehand about him not walking, the first president to ever do that I think, and I wanted to see what he would do.

I remember that when his car sped away, the SS men could not keep up. The person doing commentary noted how strange that was. She said, "You would only expect to see that if they thought the President's life was in danger."

How sad that those protesters were probably the last Bush saw thanks to "free speech" zones.

I look forward to watching Kerry walk in January.

28. I don't want to see Kerry walk in January--

One JFK assassination was enough for one lifetime, thank you.

I want Kerry to use the good sense that enabled him to survive Viet Nam, and to somehow stay alive for at least 4 years in office.

Our side throws eggs, our enemies use live ammunition.

Symbolism be damned. I know for a fact that Kennedy's Secret Service detail got drunk the night before the assassination, at The Cellar in Fort Worth, and while I would trust the Secret Service to guard the Saudis and Bush, I wouldn't trust them to guard Kerry's wastebasket.

If Kerry does walk, I want to see him surrounded by Veterans for Kerry and those who fought with him in Viet Nam, not by our Saudi-beholden, Matrix-like Secret Service, who in my opinion are just as likely to shoot him as to protect him.

36. Please...
I have friends in the Secret Service, and I find that deeply offensive. They don't view their jobs as partisans, they view it as serving their country. While they may have their own political views of the world outside of their jobs, they'd throw themselves in front of a bullet for Kerry, just as quickly as they would for dubya. And yes, there are Kerry supporting Secret Service Agents whom work protective details in and around DC. These people have laid there lives on the line for Democratic presidents, long before Dubya became the pResident, and they'll continue to do so for many Democratic presidents to come.

So stop being an idiot like the RW and making assumptions on things you have no knowledge of; I find it not only ignorant, but extremely offensive.

but had NOT seen that footage. one of the most powerful segments for me.

and, overall, there was a BIG difference in KNOWING about something and actually SEEING the archival footage.

for example, I knew about the school video, had seen it online and on a small screen... but the effect of seeing it on a HUGE screen...

devastating!

same with the egging and protestors, same with pre-invasion Iraq/Shock & Awe/same with the CBC... and on and on...

Disturbing piece of film, for me and most of all the the other half of anarchy1999. Two of his favorite films are "True Romance" and "Fight Club". I guess what is most disturbing is I've never seen a movie make my husband cry, ever (6 years+)!

32. I'd seen it shortly after the "inauguration"...
...but I had to go look for it on the net.

At the time I was stunned by the heavy-handed Soviet-style suppression of what went on at the "inauguration." The major networks and cable news channels used close-ups and other camera trickery to screen out the protesters, and all the while their commentators were babbling nonsense like about how this was the kind of event when all good Americans put aside their differences and revel in the wonderful pageantry of a new leader being sworn in. Nary a word about the Florida debacle was heard.

Meanwhile, over on C-Span, they were actually just letting the cameras roll and letting the viewers see the motorcade--and the large groups of protesters lining the parade route. C-Span being C-Span, there was no commentary at all, just the pictures and sounds of the event itself--including the anti-Bush signs and chants.

42. Two of the most breathtaking dates in media history:
1. January 20, 1993 -- After 12 years of faithfully propping up Ronnie Reagan and Papa Bush, the media did a 180 on Inauguration Day and immediately began its 8-year-long, 24/7 jihad against our last legitimate president, President Clinton. One of the few people in the so-called "liberal media" who noticed it at the time was the generally apolitical humor writer Dave Barry, who started a column by saying something like "Welcome to week number three of the failed Clinton presidency."

2. January 20, 2001 -- The media does another 180 and goes from rabid dog attacking the Clinton adminstration for phony "scandal" after phony "scandal" after unbelievably phony "scandal," to lapdog licking the genitals of Son of Bush and the thugs who comprise his illegitimate regime.
