F911: Too few screens in some states!
It literally makes me sick to my stomach to think that Gore could be our Prez right now if the Dem Party hadn't abandoned a serious campaign in WV and Appalachia in general. Now, with numbers so close in some states, a film such as F911 could tip the balance in our favor if it would find greater play in places like WV.

My partner and I got up early this morning to make the trek from the panhandle of WV to Frederick, Maryland just to see F911. The next closest theaters showing the movie were in Charlottesville, Va, Baltimore, Md or D.C. and in our own state, Beckley, which is about 4 1/2 hours from here. Not even Morgantown, home to WVU, is showing the film.

I can only hope that the film will be released on DVD before the election so that many Americans who live outside major metropolitan areas can see this vitally important documentary.

The first showing of the film this morning was sparsely attended, though this could also be attributed to the fact that this particuar theatre had been given a defective fourth reel (an announcement which was posted at the ticket window) and some folks may be waiting for that unfortunate situation to be corrected. We decided to see it anyway rather than wait, since we had already made the drive to Frederick.

Regardless of the defective reel this was a truly powerful experience. Hope we can return in a couple of weeks to see it again.

1. One theater in West Virginia
One theater, just one, in the entire state of West Virginia, is showing F9/11 -- Beckley.

Beckley is a small city deep in the heart of this state, which puts it out of the reach of most people. I was amazed to learn that it wasn't appearing in Charleston, the capitol city, or Morgantown, the site of West Virginia University. At least those of us here in the panhandle can drive over to Maryland or Northern Virginia, but the rest of the state is out of luck.

The irony is that West Virginia is disproportionately represented in the military due to all the poor people who have few job opportunities in the parched Appalachian economy -- which illustrates a central point in Moore's documentary.

2. We need a DVD
If you are elderly and can't go to a theatre, you are left out too. Many, many disabled won't see it until it comes out in a DVD.

3. I think Mississippi has you beat
Only one screen in one theater in Tupelo is showing it, and MS has twice as many people as WV
