Did anyone else hear David Cole's O'Reilly story on Franken's show?
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 10:14 PM by TheWizardOfMudd
I heard it this morning, so it was a repeat.

David Cole, constitutional law professor, was invited on O'Reilly's show. He arrived while O'Reilly was taping a segment on the 9/11 committee's report. O'Reilly did his lead-in to the segment and then they played the clip of the chairman stating that there was no connection between Iraq and 9/11.

O'Reilly stopped taping and said, "We can't play that." Then he re-did the segment without the clip and stated that the chairman said THERE WAS A CONNECTION between Iraq and 9/11; exactly the opposite.

When it came time for Cole's appearance, the two got into an argument about the NYT's reporting of the committee's report, during which both O'Reilly and Cole accused each other of mis-characterizing the NYT's article. Cole decided to take it a step further.

Cole told O'Reilly that, if he wanted to talk about mis-characterizing, then what about O'Reilly's stopping taping of the previous segment on the 9/11 committee's report, where he decided to leave out the clip of the chairman's statement and then claim the chairman said the opposite of what he actually said in the clip.

At this point, O'Reilly stopped taping again, started calling Cole a son of a bitch, and told him that portion of their discussion will never make it on the air. He also told Cole that he will never be invited on his show again.

Finally, when the show aired, Cole calling O'Reilly out for his action was, indeed, edited out.

Apparently, O'Reilly tapes all of his shows so they can edit it out whenever a guest slams O'Reilly for being a fucking liar.

3. Well, it's O'Reilly's show, and it's America.
I guess he can put whatever he wants on. What kills me when I hear stuff like this, I can't BELIEVE people try to beat up Mike Moore for being biased. He tells a whole lot more of the truth than these assholes.

Just don't be surprised when someone doesn't back down, Bill. You guys have had a whole lot more air time than you deserve. Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

4. Yeah, I heard the original interview
Everytime I hear something like that, I am so glad i stopped watching FOX many moons ago - prior to the drumbeat to war. I never watched much more than the sunday money stuff, and since the war the only time I watched was for the Dem primary debates.

6. Maybe someone could...
wear a recording device or a microphone transmitter so what actually happens on the show could be documented and played for everyone to hear and compare it to the final edit.

8. While O'Reilly misled the audience, even he didn't claim Saddam
While O'Reilly misled the audience, even he didn't claim Saddam was behind 9/11.

From
http://www.moveleft.com/moveleft_essay_2004_06_25_al_franken_exposes_bill_oreilly_deceit_saddam.asp

But when O'Reilly heard Thomas Kean on the clip say:

There is no evidence that we can find whatsoever that Iraq or Saddam Hussein participated in any way in attacks on the United States, in other words, on 9/11. What we do say, however, is there were contacts between Iraq and Saddam Hussein.

O'Reilly decided he wouldn't play the clip on his show, after all.
Of course, "contacts" doesn't mean much. There are contacts between the public and the telemarketers who call them, but they aren't collaborative contacts in most cases.

Thomas Kean also said during that intervew with George Stephanopoulos that al Qaeda had "a lot more active contacts frankly with Iran and with Pakistan than they were with Iraq."

Instead of playing that clip, O'Reilly announced, "Governor Thomas Kean says definitely there was a connection between Saddam and al Qaeda."

11. Thanks for the details
But nobody has said that O'Reilly claimed Hussein was behind 9/11.

9. I think I just read somewhere on DU there was going to be a docu-
mentary done on Fox News. I can't wait to see that one! Seems the only way we're going to find out anything anymore is at the movies.
