In 2000, GOP voters were given the choice of Former Tennessee Governor Lamar Alexander, President of The Family Research Council Gary Bower, Commentator Patrick Buchanan, former President of The American Red Cross (now Senator) Elizabeth Dole, Economist and Editor Steve Forbes, former Ambassador Alan Keys, Arizona Senator John McCain, former Vice-President Dan Quayle, and failed businessman and Texas Governor George W. Bush.


Given what you knew about them AT THAT TIME - who would you have said was the LEAST qualified, LEAST competent and LEAST appealing as a candidate.

Bauer is an anti-choice nut. A real fundie whack job.

Keyes is evil in his own right.

Quayle's a moron.

Buchanan actually looks like a safe choice in hindsight, but he has softened a bit in the past few years.

Forbes is a flake.

Alexander isn't too bad.

Dole and McCain are the most harmless choices there. Dole herself seems like an optimist, although she's tied too much to the GOP mainstream.

The GOP really dropped the ball on McCain. He could have propped up the GOP for years, but the far right loonies have really destroyed the party with their ego.

In hindsight, choosing Bush may have been a blessing in disguise for thr Dems. The Bushies have destroyed the GOP, and done irreparable damage. With McCain, they could have solidified the middle, and been very dominant for the long haul.

Seems to me * was pushed down their throats from the very beginning. And that's what amazes me. They were just too stupid to see they never had a choice. Talk about sheeple.

7. Quayle is least competent, Keyes is least appealing

I should probably mention that Alan Keyes is a distant relative of mine. Like a third cousin or something.

I knew Bush was bad, but not this bad. back then he looked like a typical Republican.

The best shot would bave been McCain and I supported him during the primaries (back when I was more conservative and registered Republican) Unfortunately the American political establishment will never allow a maverick like McCain to even be on a ticket, let alone win the general election.

Al Gore made it but only because nobody knew he was a maverick and the establishment thought they owned him. Damn! we came so close!

Kerry is establishment to the bone and has blue blood running through his veins but I'm voting for him anyway.

8. I liked Keyes' candidacy

I thought he was very sincere and made his ideas an important part of his campaign. Was it his views or was it his personality that makes him the least appealing to you?

As far as McCain, I liked him ok until I learned more about McCain/Feingold. Making it illegal to run an ad criticizing candidates before an election is so un-American that it boggles the mind that anyone who claims to be patriotic could write that bill. Of all the annoying things Bush has done, invading Iraq and signing McCain/Feingold are the worst. (Bush said the law "probably unconstitutional" but then signed anyway)

10. Not to worry Mustang

The law had loopholes big enough to drive a semi through. It was meaningless, and I feel like an idiot for supporting it for seems like a decade. Then the same guys who were shouting for it were the first ones to exploit the loopholes in it.

Just shows that we really are fools for caring many times.
