Four years ago, before the 2000 election, I did not know the political affiliations of my neighbors. Then the election was stolen and the worst president in modern history started his reign of terror.
Chance encounters happened while we were walking dogs or watching the kids play. People made comments based on bumperstickers. A screening of the anti-Iraq War documentary was held two houses down. Another neighbor was invited based on my knowledge that they were very much against the war. Some of us contributed baked goods to the MoveOn.org bake sale. We shared information about how to register people to vote and where meet-ups were being held. We swap web site recommendations. Last night a bunch of us attended a John Kerry fundraising party. Everybody had walked there because they lived close by.
I can look up and down the street and, in house after house, I know with certainty they are inhabited by people who DESPISE Bush (with a few exceptions, but those people keep a low political profile. Heh Heh). Not only that, these Bush-hating, America-loving patriots are not content to sit on their behinds. They are active and aware and involved. They are starting to put Kerry signs out on their lawns. They are forming a community based on a common goal of removing the AWOL Asshole from office.
This did not happen four years ago. We were complacent back then. Now we're furious. And active. And hopeful.
