Good for you Lion Gate
Thank YOU!
When Lions Gate Entertainment agreed to distribute "Fahrenheit 9/11" after others passed on it, it seemed to be taking a risk by getting involved in Michael Moore's documentary attacking the Bush administration.
A few weeks later, Lions Gate (LGF: news, chart, profile) is enjoying the fruits of its decision. "Fahrenheit" was the winner at the box office last weekend, bringing in a startling $21.8 million, making the movie the best-performing documentary of all time.
The movie was all the more impressive since it was released in 868 theaters over the weekend, a relatively small distribution. It was powered by a highly favorable word-of-mouth campaign and widespread media coverage, sparked by its winning the top honor at the recent Cannes Film Festival.
Big opening weekends for Hollywood movies often yield continued strong results in subsequent weeks, so it seems likely that the movie will continue to rack up an impressive box office performances.
