Poll question: Would the United States be better off...
Under a Canadian/British-style multi-party parliamentary democracy? One in which parties had the ability to create minority, coalition governments?

This should be incendiary, so fire away.

1. Both have drawbacks
Why not mix the best of both - it's possible, and a part of the Green Party platform.

3. I think it would improve our system.
Not that there wouldn't be drawbacks, but it's a shame that one-issue voters can end up supporting a party that doesn't fit well with their overall ideology. Example: my mom will vote for *, even though she is a social liberal, as abortion is the most important issue to her. Well, OK, she's a social liberal on every issue other than abortion. This type of system would give the little guys a bit of power, especially with how neck-and-neck the good guys and repukes are. They would need to court the smaller parties to form a coalition...and we might actually get a liberal government.

6. That was my point
A coalition would allow the more liberal voters of America to form a united front against the conservatives.

4. Well...............
Our premiers would have been Sam Rayburn and his successors until 1994 when Newt Gingrich would have become premier (and without the scandal/counter-scandal of the Clinton impeachment would still be premier).

8. Why? would there be a Republican party as we know it?
more likely smaller subsets of conservative voters would appear, such as the pro-lifers, fundies, no-taxers, no-U.N.ers and other various idiotic single issue collections.

7. Our system
wasn't designed for a two party system nor multi-party system (nor the corporate influence peddling), so it's hard to say.

9. Difficult to say.
Though I think it would be worth trying. We're hopelessly entrenched in the two-party system that trying to imagine it is very difficult.
