Bills for Vanderburgh County's new touch-screen voting equipment have become a political tempest pitting the county Election Board against the County Commissioners, and the two government bodies hit an impasse Monday.

The Election Board on Monday called on the commissioners to send Election Systems & Software the $500,000 in federal funds that Vanderburgh County has received as a partial reimbursement for the equipment. The commissioners refused. Democrats Catherine Fanello and David Mosby, who make up the majority on the three-member commission, said during Monday's commissioners' meeting they thought salaries paid to two people who conducted public demonstrations of the new equipment were excessive.
Fanello said she also is dismayed that Election Systems & Software promised Vanderburgh County voting equipment for the primary that would be certified according to federal standards.
It was later learned that software sold by the company to Vanderburgh and other counties was not certified. Election Systems & Software officials
"have been less than honest with me on several different occasions," Fanello said Monday.
