I'm gay. I wasn't old enough to vote in the 1992 election, but I was politically active. At the time, the lesbian/gay movement was very focused on inclusion in the armed forces, and of course Clinton said he agreed with this until faced with predictable opposition.
At the time, I wondered: why do these gay people fight for THIS at this time? Isn't repealing sodomy laws and legally recognizing relationships with domestic partnership, etc., far more important than this? Or anti-discrimination legislation? But the main theme was the military of all things.
Sometimes I'm concerned that the powers-that-be will use the demands of the gay movement to try to split up a progressive coalition. For instance, with one hand a corporation will try to smash a union, and with another will earn plaudits by enacting domestic partner benefits. How do we as progressives weigh these things?
In truth, in these times, the gay loophole is an important one. People of conscience can claim they are homosexual and be excluded from further military service. That is an important thing. Eventually the ban should be lifted, but it's LOW on my priority list at this time.
