Frist May Get New Powers
By Mark Preston
Roll Call Staff
June 28, 2004

Senate Republican leaders are considering granting Majority Leader Bill Frist (Tenn.) more power over committee assignments, a tool which would allow him to reward loyal Senators and punish wayward Republicans who fail to toe the party line.

Granted, it's not as exciting as flight or invisibility, but it's certainly appropriate.

3. Interesting
Of course it goes without saying that if Kerry wins the presidency than the Senate and House will need a lot of discipline to keep Kerry from doing anything. I guess this is how they are going to get it.

Of course, looked at another way, if President Bush gets a second term his schemes may be so crazy that some republicans will break with him; this could be a way to keep them in line.

And may turn to their disadvantage, as the powers would be a tool in the new Majority Leaders hands.

setting things up like this because they KNOW what they're going to do to remain in power. Sounds like the R's are having one hell of a time with their own. Wonder how many are jumping to the other side.

to give one of the slimiest corpo-fascists amongst them even MORE power. They're grooming him for '08, you know. Sick kids in Africa my ass.

If you can't tell by my nic, Frist is the unholiest of unholies, in my opinion -- but really he's tied with Cheney, DeLay and Richard Perle....:)

Where the husband is rising to political power, and he's supposed to be the anti-christ or something. He and Frist have melded into the same person, in my visual of the movie.

16. That ought to promote harmony in the GOP Big Tent. Seems the Dems might
be able to persuade a few Pub senators to pull a "Jeffords" if this plan is implemented. I am thinking Chaffee, Snowe, and Hagel. They can keep that weasel Lindsay Graham.

37. Have you noticed his scheduling of the same sex marriage vote?
This was a letter to the editor of our paper this weekend (I actually know the guy who wrote it). I haven't read this whole thread so I don't know if it has been discussed but thought this was pretty shifty. Here's the letter:

Sen. Frist plays politics with Senate calendar

To the Editor:

Sen. Bill Frist must quit playing clumsy politics with the Senate calendar. He has scheduled Senate consideration of the same sex marriage discrimination amendment during the Democratic National Convention. I wonder why? (''Kerry says GOP barred him from vote,'' June 24)

And just June 22, our senator delayed a vote concerning veterans benefits to create petty inconvenience to John Kerry. Frist mused that Kerry should resign as senator in light of the latter's presidential campaign commitments.

How about this: Kerry can resign once perpetual fund-raiser George W. Bush steps down. It sounds fair to me, but fairness has nothing to do with what Frist is after.

Howard Baker is surely ashamed of this dearth of statesmanship. Our country deserves so much more.
