Howard Stern has a new fan
and that would be me. Just this morning I was listening as he held a press conference with numerous reporters from the networks, Reuters, papers, etc. and he is so impassioned about a Kerry Victory and Bush defeat this November that I was moved to write to his webmaster the following letter:

hi howard,

i am a 46 year old grandma, a liberal, a lesbian and a feminist. these labels apply to what i'm going to tell you because, like many people of my age and lifestyle, i was never a fan of the howard stern show. but now i am.

i am an avid member of the www.democraticunderground.com and that is where i first became aware that you have become an activist against bush. so i asked my son-in-law (a nascar dad and a bus mechanic, a sector of the bush base) about it because i knew he listened to you in his shop every day. he confirmed what i heard and went one step further and asked me for voter registration forms for himself and my daughter. he is pissed about what is going on with you and vows to do his part to vote bush out. they are both almost 30 and have never voted before in their lives.

so now, i am listening to you on my way to work in the mornings (101.5 kzon in phoenix) instead of npr, and enjoying every minute of the show. today's news conference was awesome and i was driving extra slow so i would get to hear it all before i had to walk into my office.

thank you for what you are doing. i really believe that between you and michael moore, we can beat these bastards in november and take our country back. power to the people!!! and all the best to you. i appreciate more than you know that you are taking them on at great personal cost to yourself. YOU are the definition of an american patriot.

1. Good...
I think it is hypocritical that Dick can curse out Senators and yet Stern has to pay $500,000 for a curse word. They made a big mistake going after him, since he can moblizie his fan base against them....Far as I know freedom of speech is guranteed in this country...

2. thanks for the link - I sent a thank-you e-mail too
great idea - and great that so many males in Howards target audience are getting exposed to different points of view than they normally would.

4. I used to listen to Stern before * was selected.
Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 01:24 PM by ThirdWheelLegend
I used to listen off and on when I worked a day shift job then. I would get annoyed at times when the show was just plain offensive and stopped being funny. I stopped altogether listening because he was pro-war and seemingly pro-bush. Also I eventually got a job second shift, which I still have now. I don't listen to him now only because I am sleeping when Stern is on the air.

But I have to tell you, from what I have been hearing through clips people have posted here, I am one heck of a Stern supporter now. With the reach that his show has, Howard can be a valuable asset to the fight against presidential scumbaggery.

Nice letter hippiegranny!

7. ya never know...
... say, what do you think: would it be the grandma, liberal, feminist or LESBIAN angle that would elicit that sort of interest? :)

6. Just A Warning
He's very likely to still piss you off! I'm a fan and have been a listener since the beginning and I've NEVER seen him on a mission like this, but it's NOT the only thing he does on his show. He still does his infantile bathroom humor and still has lots of strippers and porn stars etc. So if that's not your type of humor there will still be parts of the show that are going to turn you off.

That being said, if you take if for what it is, Stern is a great entertainer, brutally honest and one of the BEST interveiwers on the planet!

8. oh i know that
i've been listening for a while. some days i do go back to npr. but this morning's press conference was simply outstanding. i was riveted. he's really quite intelligent and when he is passionate about something as important as free speech and this election, he is serious, informed and extremely well spoken.

9. I listened to the conference also...
Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 01:38 PM by RUSTY SHACKLEFORD
I'm a long time listener and big fan of the Stern Show. I really admire what Howard is doing, but I did have one problem with the conference this morning. One of the questions he got asked was "What would you define as lewd broadcasting?" and Howard completely side-stepped and politicized the question. I was very disappointed in the insincere nature of his response. Even as a fan of the Stern show, I can recognize that Howard has indeed crossed the line on occasion.

10. Uhh, He Did NOT Sidestep The Question
That's not HIS decision to make and one of the whole points of his crusade. If they (the FCC and Bushco.) are going to fine people for indecency THEY are the one's who need to define it, not Howard. The gov't has purposely NOT defined it since that means they can arbitrarily fine whomever pisses them off anytime they want.

11. We all have an opinion on what is lewd.
The question was very specific. It was not "What do you think should the FCC guidelines be regarding lewd broadcasting?" or anything ambiguous. The reporter clearly asked for Howard's opinion and he immediately began rambling about governments that lie and get people killed and on and on.

That said, I wholeheartedly agree that we should be doing everythng in our power to get the Bush junta out.

13. Yeah, And The Way I Interpreted His Answer
was that THAT was what he thought was indecent and so he DID answer the question...(on a side note, I don't quite remember, are you sure the question was "lewd"? I thought it was "indecent", but I could be wrong)...

15. i guess i agreed with stern's take on that question
when asked what he would consider indecent. i too believe the atrocities of pre-emptive war on a helpless sovereign nation, nearly 900 america soldiers dead, god knows how many times that seriously wounded, over 10,000 dead iraqis, to be way more indecent than bad language, farting and janet jackson's tit. he didn't sidestep, he scored a bullseye with that answer, imho.

17. And How Does the Gov't Spread Their Lies?
Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 04:16 PM by Beetwasher
They get broadcast on Fox News (just one example)...He did answer the question and I agree...Fox News is more indecent than anything Howard ever did...

I heard the press conference and this is how I interpreted his answer, I thought he had a valid point. You may disagree, but I think you're wrong to say he sidestepped the question.

12. I can define what's obscene
Bush ads. The FCC should fine them every time one of those ads are aired.

14. Not sure I'd agree with that.
As much as I dislike the chimp, I can't favor political oppression in any form. Just be stooping to their level.

Maybe you can cite something specific from one of those ads that you consider obscene? I might be able to agree with you if that's the case...

19. Howard Stern is "everyman"
he is a good gauge on what is going on in the country. He has already helped several moderate politicians in the NE and an endorsement form him is more like a symptom than a commandment. A symptom of a gorundswell.

The landslide won't happen BECAUSE of Stern. It will be a landslide because there are so many people just like Stern.
