NBC Poll: Bush
'down but not out'
Many Americans believe president misled
them on war, but he's still tied with Kerry

By Mark Murray
NBC News
Updated: 6:28 p.m. ET June 30, 2004WASHINGTON - With just over four months until election day, a near-majority of Americans believe the nation is headed in the wrong direction and that President Bush deliberately misled the public to make the case for war in Iraq, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds. Yet even with those less-than-positive numbers for the president, the survey also shows that the race between Bush and presumptive Democratic nominee John Kerry is a statistical tie.

7. So they're spinning Bush* as the new comeback kid ALREADY?
The CM whores are busy bees I see.

"Down but not out" - Ooh, Bush* is such a fighter. Dare I say...a warrior.

17. No kidding
One of the current RW "talking points" is "Why Kerry isn't doing better". Basically trying to Bush's miserable failures into a failing of Kerry - it's amazing.

36. It only stands to reason Bush down != Kerry up ...
... if the reason why Bush is down really is because Americans are starting to feel the con about the war. Kerry has to unhitch his wagon from Bush's on Iraq -- not just to say "Bush is screwing up this war" but "Bush screwed us with this war".

That being said, this could be a rare case where polls trend downward from reality rather than upward -- people may be hesitant to endorse Kerry outright, but once they're in the polls, he's what they've got. Jim Hightower probably spoke for any fence-sitters when he said, "First we get rid of George Bush, then we get rid of John Kerry."

They only play them on Cspan and The News Hour on PBS though.

Sometimes CBS plays snippets as well.

9. Its too early.....
....he's got plenty of time...this is part of the strategy. The public doesn't even know this man and he's in a dead heat with the president and that is after two months of negative advertising by the bush side....he'll be fine.

24. Yes...but
he is not seen, heard nor visable enough. Something has to happen. Bush is on television almost every single day. Press releases with his name plastered all over the internet and print are visable hundreds of times a day.

It appears that none of the prime time stations are interviewing Kerry. And in Florida, south Florida, I have seen two ads.

I agree he is doing fine, his message is very good and his energy is fun to watch on these little snippets we are offerred, but who the hell sees them but people like us?

10. Part of that is out of his hands
because events, like Reagan's death, kept him out of the news. But I agree it soon is time for him to gain some momentum. I think he will.

16. Only 36% of people feel we're headed in the right direction...
...yet 45% want to see Bush continue to lead us in the wrong direction for another four years?

"...and independent candidate Ralph Nader gets 4 percent. Nader is not yet officially on any state ballot." So why is Nader on all of these Cheneying polls?

18. What they fail to admit
is that W is this low despite the fact, that he has already spent about 3/4 of his war chest. And despite the fact, that we just had D-Day, Ronniepoluzza, the G8 and NATO meetings and handed over Iraq.

Bu$h should be kicking butt and he doesn't have a hope is what's really going on.

He's always trailed by at least 3 points. They also don't have is approval rating in this article. Was it on the news?

30. "Gosh, Why Isn't Kerry Doing Better?"
From the LBN thread:

Man how I hate the "Gosh, why isn't Kerry doing better?" bullshit. All these amnesiac or whore-moron reporters. Clinton didn't win 50% of the vote in either election I believe and here Kerry is up against the post 9/11 "war" president, has hardly campaigned, while Bush spent $80 million on negative ads and has been campaigning since he set foot in office on OUR dollar, and Kerry is poised to take this thing 4 months out...That's AMAZING AND HISTORIC!!!

33. But the Clinton Comparison
is not relevant, it was a whole different set of circumstances. Clinton never ran against anybody with the negative news that Bush has dealt with in the past several months. I find it incomprehensible that Bush isn't further behind. The guy has fucked up royally, and he's even with Kerry. And I don't blame Kerry for this.

35. Nope, Sorry, I Don't Buy It
Read the poll, a good portion of the people polled have NO CLUE who Kerry is or what he stands for, they don't even know he's a veteran.

Bush on the other hand has been campaigning CONSTANTLY and using gov't resources to do so to boot. It's amazing Kerry, w/ virtually no campaigning and running against a POST 9/11 "war" president is even at this point, especially after an $80 million barrage of negative campaigning...

When Kerry actually starts to really campaign and spend money he will start to skyrocket.

Also, if you read the article that appeared in the NYT you would realize that this race is following a known historical trend that suggest the challenger is NEVER considered at this point in the race and at this point it's always about the incumbent. It's only later that people begin to pay attention to the challenger.
