Reactions to Selection Are Positive in General
By ELISABETH ROSENTHAL

RANKLIN, Tenn., July 6 - Reactions were generally positive here on Tuesday as news percolated through town that Senator John Kerry had chosen a Southerner, Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, as his running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket.

"Nice guy," "charismatic" and "Nice to have someone from our part of the country" were some of the comments.

There was little evidence on Main Street in this conservative city of 40,000 near Nashville that Mr. Kerry's choice would change minds or lure fence sitters to the Democrats.

"I like John Edwards and suppose I might have voted for Edwards as president, but never for Kerry," Richard Horn, a plant manager, said. "So I'm going to vote for Bush again."

The choice of Mr. Edwards did help solidify support for the ticket among the many voters who said they were inclined to vote Democratic but considered Mr. Kerry, a Yale-educated senator from Massachusetts, too liberal and aristocratic.<snip>

"I'm not satisfied with either of them,'' Diane Cohn, a teacher who voted for Mr. Gore in 2000, said. "And I may not even vote, which is sad, since I always do. Not voting is sacrilegious to me. I may vote for Bush, I suppose, and I was really glad he was there after 9/11. But I'm really against the Iraq war. And Kerry? He's got to do something major to get people like me lit up. That something needs to be more than just Southern charisma."

and this is a teacher???????
