Get a load of Taxpayer CBS quotes in story - Unbiased? - BS!
Daily Kos does great in outing this one!

http://www.dailykos.com/

An old law school buddie of mine saw something interesting in a CBS News report last week:

When Andrea and Dennis Cariello got married last year, they thought their taxes would go up, and were dreading writing out that check on April 15. But instead, they got back $4,000.
"It was just a tremendously wonderful surprise that we weren't being hit at the same rate I'd expected, and we weren't being hit with the marriage penalty," says Dennis Cariello.

The Cariellos are putting the money right back into the economy, and that means fixing up their house.

They've got just one request. "I'd tell the President to keep doing what he's doing and hopefully drop taxes down even further," says Dennis Cariello.

So who is Dennis Cariello? A swing voter? Independent? Nope.
He is the president of the New York Young Republicans Club.

4. This probably happens every day in the mainstream pro-Bush media
They run press releases by the Bush campaign as news stories every day.

7. I saw that piece.
And I was a bit skeptical about his claim. I wonder if they even verified his returns. I'll e-mail them my complaint.

9. Here's the complaint I wrote:
I Tivo CBS news every night. I was dissapointed with your story last week on the Bush and Kerry tax plans, primarily because the subjects of the story, Andrea and Dennis Cariello, made a claim about their tax savings under Bush that was both unspecific and difficult to believe.

I've just learned that Mr. Cariello is the President of the New York Young Republicans Club, and now I'm wondering if CBS even verified the claims the Cariellos made about their tax savings. At the very least, you should have let your audience know about their affiliation with the Republican party.

Did they save over $4000 on their taxes? Your piece didn't actually make it clear how much they had saved, though that was the implication. That figure is hard to believe, especially considering that the Cariellos stated that they didn't have any children. The Child Tax Credit was probably the single biggest source of tax savings for most middle class taxpayers.

I'm assuming that the Cariellos earn a middle class income, since your story was about how tax plans effect "average people." According to this table http://www.dcpress.com/jmb/marriage.htm#table2 the Cariellos would have to earn well over $200,000 in combined income to see a $4000 reduction in their taxes due to the elimination of the marriage penalty. That would put them well out of the average.
