"We've Turned the Corner" is new Bush slogan
How F**king stupid can you get?

That was the slogan from Herbert Hoover's re-election campaign in 1932.

If you're going to steal a slogan, try to make it from a winning campaign, not the worst President in modern times (until Bush Jr.)

Some experts, Rove & Co. Now that they have to play defense, let's see how good they are.

When this thing gets away from them, they will unravel like a ball of yarn. Finger pointing time is just around the corner, boys and girls.

The fun is just beginning.

6. Seriously, that was Hoover's campaign slogan????
You think anyone in the bush campaign has a CLUE as to that?

Because THAT'S fricking funny.

Guess they assume no one knows anything about American presidential history. The people voting for bush in November surely don't.

Again, how funny! Are the bush people TRYING to lose?

46. Hoover said it in 1932 "Prosperity is just around the corner" LOL
http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/wall_street_crash.htm

"Hoover did not believe that the depression would last - "Prosperity is just around the corner" is what he said to businessmen in 1932 when things were just about at their worst."

You think the Kerry people were shitting themselves silly when they made the 'turning the corner' connection with Hoover?

that made it onto the ABC evening news. Looks like Rove should have cracked open the history book during the "talking points" meeting before this thing was hathced. Hopefully Kerry or the campaign will continue hammering on this. Could be an "out of touch" controversy brewing here.

Born July 4, 1872, died January 6, 1933.
Herbert C. Hoover (President, March 4, 1929-March 4, 1933, Republican): "The Great Engineer," Hoover was an international mining engineer with reputations for both making money and public service. He directed private relief efforts during World War I, then served as Wilson's U.S. food administrator (1917), as Director of Relief and Reconstruction (1918), and then as Secretary of Commerce under Harding and Coolidge. In 1928 he was easily nominated for President and elected on a theme of American "rugged individualism", with an expectation of a well-organized administration. Within the year the stock market crashed (October, 1929), the Great Depression began, and millions of Americans lost their jobs or farms. Hoover's conventional responses proved inadequate, and his hopeful statements ("we have turned the corner") were sneered at. Renominated, he lost badly to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Born in Iowa and orphaned young, he was raised by relatives in Oregon and then moved to California to attend Stanford University, where he met his wife, Lou Henry, also a trained engineer. They had two sons. Democratic President Harry Truman later appointed Republican Hoover to head a commission on efficiency in government, known as the “Hoover Commission.”

I wonder why? :D

I had to post some of the lyrics that madaboutharry linked:

http://www.ocap.ca/songs/prosper.html

Why I read in Monday's paper that 10,000 men were hired!
(Yes, but Tuesday they forgot to say 12,000 more were fired.)
Well, I insist that this land of ours is stable!
(Stable? sounds like horses to me!)

Prosperity is just around the corner!
(Did you say corner or coroner?)
Our credit is still strong, no one can doubt it!
(I guess my landlord don't know about it.)

I see the market is going up, now you can't call that a joke!
(I recollect one time before it went clear up in smoke.)
This slump is just mostly imagination!
(Yeah, well you just try to pay your grocery bill with that!)

I'm glad I started this thread. I knew that was a Hoover slogan from the depression, and when I heard Bush say it live today on C-Span I knew his goose was cooked.

I'm so glad you guys picked up on it.

Has Kerry responded to it by reminding voters that it was a Hoover slogan?

If so, link please.

30. Kerry Pounds The Phrase Into Oblivion
"Yesterday, the president said to Americans that we were turning the corner, referring to the economy," Kerry said in Greensburg. "Well, let me ask you, if you're one of those 44 million Americans that don't have health insurance are you turning the corner? If you're one of those people who has a job ... that's been forced overseas, are we turning the corner for those folks?"

Despite slower-than-expected economic growth and a record budget deficit, Bush insisted that the nation's economic prospects were improving as he campaigned in neighboring Ohio, another battleground state hit hard by job losses.

But Kerry drew a parallel between Bush and Herbert Hoover, who as president during the Great Depression presided over an economy that experienced the biggest job losses in U.S. history.

"The last time we had a president who ran on a slogan of turning the corner was Herbert Hoover, and he ran on the prospect that prosperity was just around the corner," Kerry said. "I don't want to run talking about turning the corner. I'm running to climb the mountain and get to the top."

37. Vietnam resonance, too
There was a famous cartoon at the time of the Tet offensive. In the cartoon, Westmoreland was running top speed around a corner, smack dab into a Viet Cong running with a rifle. The cartoon's caption:

"WE'VE TURNED THE CORNER!"

Westmoreland's "We've turned the corner" was almost as politically disastrous as his "There's a light at the end of the tunnel." Very bad slogan. Kerry and his people should dig up all those old Westmoreland quotations on that. They were everywhere in the late-winter of 1967 - after the Dak To campaign, right up through the beginning of the Tet Offensive in late-January 1968 (part of Westmoreland's campaign for 250,000 MORE troops, denied).

Westmoreland's slogan, right before the Tet offensive, was "We've Turned the Corner." Kerry needs to grab this by the horns and make these fuckers pay for their lack of historical insight.
