When at the Boston DU gathering this week, our group was talking about the different roles that people have played to get us to this point.
Howard Dean, the dixie chicks, Joe Wilson, misanthrope, Sibel Edmonds, Whoopi Goldberg, Michael Moore, Sam Berger, Max Cleland for starters. The ones who dared speak out and share their view, which was disagreement with Bush*. Many of these people suffered, some of them horribly so. Some are famous, some are anonymous. I've left out people, I know - please help me remember them all.
I was perhaps a bit crass (maybe it was the drink), and said, that I would step on over that person and keep walking toward the final objective - defeating Bush. I did not mean that I don't care, I really just meant that we had to keep our eye on the ball, and not become paralyzed in the horror, but continue on in the race.
Those courageous people, whether or not they intended to insert themselves into the line of fire, deserve our thanks, our comfort, our assistance. There will be a day for each of them where we can celebrate and salute their courage. For Max Cleland, that day was Thursday, and it was glorious.
Remember them, comfort them, let them rest, but do not quit.
There is a poem my great uncle used on his handouts some 40 years ago when running for re-election as a state rep. It is a little hooky- but seems appropriate today --
When things go wrong as they sometimes will; When the road you're trudging seems all uphill; When the funds are low, and the debts are high And you want to smile, but have to sigh; When care is pressing you down a bit- Rest if you must, but do not quit.
Success is failure turned inside out; The silver tint of the clouds of doubt; And you can never tell how close you are It may be near when it seems so far; So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit- It's when things go wrong that you must not quit.
