I got an idea - rnc protest - please look.
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 12:31 PM by mdmc
I've been reading about the lock down expected in NYC for the rnc.
I was thinking that a peace vigil down in lower Manhattan would be a strong counter message to the rnc.
Another idea that I had was staging a protest to the rnc in far off Pike County, PA. Since the 'protest pen' in NYC will be so 'confining', why not forgo the physical presence in NYC and spend energy, money & time in the swing state of Pennsylvania? Pike county, PA, here come the protesters of the rnc! They want choice, rights, and health care! And jobs!
Maybe Kerry and Edwards could go to Pike County during the rnc.
What say you, DU?

1. An expansion of that Idea...how about doing a "Concert", a "Woodstock"
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 01:07 PM by Pachamama
...of sorts with lots of Celebs and musical artists like Bruce Springsteen, P-Diddy, Black Eyed Peas, The Dixie Chicks, John Melloncamp, The Dead, Linda Rondstadt, Bob Dylan, U2 etc. etc. and have it be a Concert for Peace & the Constitution? Tie it in with Ben Franklin and have a march from Philadelphia, the city of Brotherly Love?

This is a seriously awesome idea....All the smart Manhattanites can leave NYC and join us for the fun....So while NYC remains under lock down, we can all be showing our rights to free speech and opinion and dissent by having a good time - Imagine the contrast - Brownshirts and Gestapo in NYC dressed in Fatiques and Black Riot Gear - or Americans from all over peacefully gathered to protest the Bush Administration and its policies....We could get some Quaker Farmers to open up their farm land - Me likey.....

TAKING BACK OUR DEMOCRACY!!! The March from Philadelphia.....

:bounce:

4. Philly ain't that far, is it? Dem Fest just took place in Kingston
major event in the cultural and political life of the Hudson Valley:

DEMOCRATIC FESTIVAL 2004

Saturday, July 31st* 4 – 10 pm

(rain date Sunday, August 1st)

at Dietz Stadium, Kingston

*The same day as the Woodstock Library Fair, but later. Pray for sunshine!

General admission $15; Seniors and students $10

children 12 and under free

Free parking Snack bar

This will be a most enjoyable event for people of all ages and even party affiliations – a fun family outing and a world-class music festival. There will be a variety of supervised children’s activities, fine craft vendors, an exhibit of art by young people and by noted artists, and street theatre. Add six hours of spectacular musical performances by cultural icons of the Hudson Valley region, supported by top professional technical staff, and you have the event of the year for this area!

The Festival audience will be taken on a virtual trip around a world of music – bluegrass, celtic, rock, pop Americana, original blues, witty musical satire, mainstream jazz, free jazz, contemporary folk, ragtime old and new, solo and group song – by over forty world-class performers. Some are creating new material especially for this event, notably the redoubtable Peter Schickele, who will be abetted by a young quartet featuring his own gifted son and daughter.

The Ulster County Democratic Committee sponsors the Democratic Festival 2004 in celebration of recent gains in the County Legislature. For the first time in County history, the Democrats are in position to become the majority party. Proceeds from the Festival will support an all-out effort to get out the vote for Democratic candidates in local elections and in the crucial Presidential race. Democratic elected officials, candidates and County Committee will be present to meet attendees and the press.

Experience the exhilaration! All are welcome. There’s room for everyone in the Democratic Party.

12. Whatever happened to the Bruce Springsteen idea?
The idea that Springsteen was organizing a mega-concert at the Meadowlands in nearby New Jersey - to be broadcast in prime time at the same time Chimpy gives his speech?

Did this go anywhere?

7. Hey, my roomies are on their way to SPAC
to see Bob and the boys tonight. I have to work (shit! I keep procrastinating!), but this type of thing has been done locally before. If I was in charge of the DLC, this would be job one. It might be too late now, me thinks...

6. Ed Rendell- Gov and Former Mayor of Philadelphia - Hell, he'd lead the
Parade!!! Teresa would return to Pennsylvania! It's a Battleground state! It's a 1 hour+ train ride from Manhattan to Philadelphia, 1hour+ from Baltimore and 2+ hours from DC....

Yahoo! This is it folks! You need a protest? Screw NYC, go to Philadelphia and March to a concert in the country side outside in Quaker/Amish Country!

9. I would love to see it. It would be a great boost in a swing state
after the dnc in Boston, Kerry and Edwards stopped in my home town. They were unable to stop at Stateline, PA and another PA stop. They really have to do something to help heal the hurt.

to Philadelphia....My memory of the birth of our country and Constitution is fuzzy right now (its sleep deprivation from having a new lil one) but if memory serves me right about the birthplace of our democracy and Constitution....

And how about that Liberty Bell ringing?? Huh, huh???? :kick:

14. How about we all go to the nearest toilet
wherever we are and flush when he steps up to the podium for his convention speech. (I'd suggest doing it at the end but it would be cruel to require people to listen.) Anyplace with a public water supply will be able to validate the protest by the increase in water usage.

You can't execute something that big in less than 30 days.

18. Want to make a bet? I've seen Counter- Mktg Campaigns launched
.... literally in less than a week when necessary.

Build it and they will come....Please tell me that if this was announced in the next week-10 days with a huge FREE concert, that people (especially using the Internet) wouldn't be abuzz and planning to go.

There are also plenty of well-funded Dems and organizations who could foot the bill and sponsor it...

19. well,
Nostjomi (a DU poster) has a politcal caberet in NYC. I know some folks with www.musicforamerica.com , I don't know. Maybe it could work.

I just think that the protest should look more like a peace vigil, more like a lecture. it should look less then Chicago68.
