How many businesses went under because of 9/11?
In particular I was thinking about the ones in the trade towers but I am sure there were ripple effects to other businesses. I really did not know all of the businesses located there. I know Morgan Stanley was there and they survived. Did any actually go out of business because of the attack or did they all come back?

1. They did NOT all come back.

A number of small retailers didn't survive...some of the office businesses. Understand, small businesses live month to month. Close off their streets for months.....it's over. Some are only alive because of the donated money. And many people who were thrown out of work because of 9/11 still do not have jobs. Some are working, but for tens of thousands of dollars less.

My uncle's law practice is only beginning to come back. His building is on Chambers Street and everyone in it suffered economically.

2. Marriott Hotels got hit big. I was working at their time share
company. A lot of people got laid off. Their fortunes go with the airlines because businesses are the big payers for both sectors.

3. I worked for a software co in California
We were already struggling before, and had deals in the pipeline with lots of companies in the WTC, which were cancelled after 911. We had a 1/3 RIF on Oct 12 (including me), and the company has still not recovered.

5. My own recruiting/staffing business went down the tubes in 2003...
...after doing business since 1998.

Painful to learn a brand-new business at the age of 53 while dealing with crushing debt.

6. Travel was very tough
My business suffered. I think the terrorist damage to tourism has levelled off, but now the gas prices and job losses are hurting. Normally, even in a slight economic downturn, we can depend on an increase in local tourism because it's cheaper. But because of gas prices, not this year. The whole thing sucks.
