45. My grandfather went on about the ACLU once...
...and made an intriguing argument. He said that the ACLU only defends the parts of the constitution they want to.

I don't agree completely, but even if they did, so? So does the NRA (of which he is a member)!

Contrary to popular right-wing belief, the ACLU has sided with religious activists in freedom-to-exercise-religion cases too. They even sided with Jerry Falwell once:

Yeag, I'm going to get two those (the tolerance one and the one with the airplace). . .right after I:

1: get my lobotomy,
2: chop my balls off and,
3: crucify myself upside over a pot of boiling oil with honey on my body so fire and harvester ants can eat me alive.

Once every human is dead, will there be peace.

Let's say these warmonger crackpots use their weapons and exterminate all dissenters... they'll eventually turn amongst themselves finding new silly arguments to create new dissenters.

The cycle never ends.

Tolerance is the greatest virtue of them all and it takes people with the strongest OF convictions to make it stick.

I don't recall the circumstances, but back around 1980, I saw the KKK's "newspaper," at the back of which was a full-page advertisement for Klan merchandise. And one of the T-shirts bore that slogan!

The other T-shirt slogan I recall from that paper is, "Racial purity is America's security." :puke:

35. I saw the one on abortion... they do NOT want to go there...
I recently studied the theories and practices on how the Extremist Right-Wing Christian Fundamentalist fanatics look at a person's life in a nutshell. Here it is, for your enjoyment - warning - it isn't pretty, but it's true! (Indeed, anybody who values life knows that life, as with society, transcends money... and money is the credo of the extremist right-wing sect.)

The moment the sperm enters the egg, it becomes a bona fide life that must be protected at all costs. We must value human life. Abortion is wrong and immoral and illegal because it is a human life. That life must have more value than the grown woman allowing it to grow. It must be protected at all costs because it has a right to life in the prosperous, rich world we've created for it. Kill the doctors and jail the women if need be, but the unborn must be protected at all costs! (True, depending on the circumstances that child should be allowed to live, but the "pro-lifers" take things to goofy extremes.)

Then the baby plops out of the womb. At this point it's sadly a matter of luck as to how much of an education, health care, food, and the other amenities of life that the baby gets. (not to mention the grown children that make our country and world the way it is.) The republicans now say to the parents, and heartlessly, "Better have a good job to raise the child or we'll take it away, we won't give you welfare, even though we subsidize our corporate buddies who don't need any money" - particularly when solid jobs are being moved out of the United States and what jobs remain in the country are worth less in wages and 'benefits'. It's just as strange how the Republicans have a history of supporting corporate interests over peoples' interests. Geez, even George W Bush, who proclaimed the "No child left behind" initiative, lacks the courage to even fund 1/3rd of the budget he originally proposed for it. What a freakin' hypocrite...

The child grows up and needs to remain "economically independent." Now the Republicans say another classic maxim: "Nobody is entitled to a job." Great, these so-called "protectors of life" don't give a frick if people are homeless or can't take care of themselves. (which kind of leads us to tangent 3, in a way...)

Okay, the now-adult gets a job. Of course, the Republicans say "work hard and you'll be rewarded!" Well, lots of adults work 2 or more jobs and still don't even make $11/hr combined! A proper LIVING wage is $12/hr, minimum. Meanwhile, the Republican corporations' CEOs and higher management give themselves (multi-)millions of dollars in wages and benefits and sometimes fire their staff without giving themselves a just due decline in their own wages. Don't you long for the days (before 1981, strangely enough) when the CEO/average worker pay ratio was closer to 40/1 compared to the 400+/1 it is today? Don't you long for the days when only one parent needed to work so the other one could spend a proper amount of time raising their children?

Now comes a turning point in a person's life. Let's look at the possible outcomes:

Tangent 1: The adult commits murder, who cares why even if the reason is the stress and pain our rich, prosperous society generates. What do the "pro-life" folk say? "Fry 'im in the chair!!! Let 'im die!!!" It seems that the right to life is conditional, but solely on their terms.

Tangent 2: The adult commits a less serious crime. What do the pro-lifers want? "Don't keep him in jail, it costs a lot to feed him and clothe him and give him free cable! Let him do work for a far reduced wage." So the adult is still productive, but is no longer free because, what it boils down to is, the society we created for him turned out to be a sham that benefits a select few. After a few years, we'll let him out. But then he's got no home to go to, so he's homeless again. May as well commit another crime or try to get euthanized. This leads us to tangent 3, in a way...

Tangent 3: The adult lives to a ripe old age of 67 (or the person is tired of living in the world we ostensibly created for him to "prosper" in and assuming the aftermaths of peak oil doesn't kill the adult off...). Even if he gets to 67, the way America is headed, we can't afford Social Security and not all folks have nest eggs, particularly when greedy companies screw everybody over for their own profit. The aged person wants to be euthanized in a neat, painless matter because he can't contribute anymore and lives in a society where the old aren't appreciated as it is. The Christians, at this point, come up with the mutha of all excuses: "Christians cannot agree with such a pragmatic 'culture of death'."

And, of course, that other possibility, tangent 4: (this was given to me by an acquaintance...) The person doesn't commit a crime, but ends up homeless or seriously poor and forced to live in a rancid icky little apartment. In their "pro-life" exuberance, the fundies will refuse to offer help to these people, saying "God helps those who help themselves" or "Buck up - Jesus loves you!"; some fundies will help, and God bless 'em for it; some other fundies will help them, but force them to listen to a sermon, or possibly even to be "born again" to receive help, otherwise they will just rot away from starvation and lack of human contact. But the fundies are okay with that, because that's the "choice" the person made, to be poor and destitute, because they didn't "work hard enough". But definitely in no way should the government, which forced that person to be born, be offering any help with those good Christian's tax money, because, dammit, there are FOREIGNERS to defend ourselves against and to kill in war.
