Looks like AWOL may go national!
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 03:34 PM by Kanzeon

Keep your fingers crossed!

If this hits, Bush is going down, down down in the polls- especially when one says, "OK, that was 30 years ago, but what about 'My Pet Goat'?"

1. I think any website
that deliberately defines itself in reference to Drudge is next-to-meaningless.

4. The reason we use drudge is...
That he's the most recognizable site that does something akin to what we do, which is to provide a headline indice. If we were to say, "the liberal headline indice" nobody would have a f*ing clue what we were doing...

Letterman did more to make this story have an effect than all the TV "news" channels combined.

13. It's beating a dead horse.
Everyone knows Bush was AWOL. They may not say it out loud, but every one of them is wondering where Bush's "Band of Brothers" is; why he can't produce even *one* person with whom he served in Alabama. It's human nature that won't be denied. We'll derive no more benefits, and may lose some ground, by continuing to harp on it.

OTOH, if someone finds a prosecutable offense, then let me be the first to jump on the bandwagon.

40. I disagree
To punch thru the rather thick middle-American mindset you have to make sure they hear it(a word or a message) at least 30 times before it takes. It's not that they're stupid, it's just the way their brains work. Think about it in terms of teaching 3 year olds to talk.

20. FWIW, according to the ABC, the top five are...
  1. USA Today (2.6 million)
  2. The Wall Street Journal (2.1 million)
  3. The New York Times (1.6 million)
  4. The Los Angeles Times (1.3 million)
  5. The Washington Post (slightly over 1 million)

(ABC, in this context, refers to the Audit Bureau of Circulations, not the ABC owned by Da Mouse... ;-) )

24. ;) That's correct.
It's one of those. And the more enterprising can knock out two more based on the story.

Regardless, it all comes down to Monday AM: Does Korb say that Bush missed and did not make up those five months? Basically, it's almost a no-brained that he will, but that's what the paper is waiting on. Fingers crossed.

By John Byrne | Raw Story Editor

Instead of dispelling claims that President George W. Bush was absent without leave (AWOL), a close inspection of the payroll records released by the White House actually show that the President never completed five months of missed Air Force National Guard service in 1972 and 1973, RAW STORY can reveal.

The research, conducted by Paul Lukasiak, surrounds two pages in Bush’s payroll records from the second quarter of the calendar year 1973.

Irrespective of the “points system” mentioned by Bush advisers, it appears to prove that the President did not meet basic requirements for “satisfactory service.”

When Michael Moore called him a deserter at a Wes Clark rally, the RWers were rabid and foaming at the mouth. They made life miserable for Moore and Clark for weeks. Remember that Faux News debate??? UGHHHHHHH! I DO! Everyone wanted Moore AND Clark to apologize and no apologies were forthcoming. :)

28. Rawstory should look into the Human Reliability Program angle.
I have felt all along that there was much more to the AWOL story than Lt. Bu$h missing guard drills and a flight physical. The USAF's Human Reliability Program might have drummed Junior out of the guard.

30. The deserter thread is one we're investigating
It's really too complicated to get into right now, but yeah, the reason we haven't done EVERYTHING yet is that it's so difficult to explain, and we want to stick to the 'easy' stuff first.

If he was HRP'd out, he neither deserted nor was AWOL. I'd check out HRP just to cover my ass on the story. Not that you could find anything, given the scrubbing.

Meanwhile, good luck. I'll send you any tidbits I glean.

29. This Story, Sir
Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 12:14 PM by The Magistrate
Will certainly affect the election profoundly.

It is already simmering as a subtext in the popular mind. All the necessary ground work has been laid.

It is one reason for the great emphasis placed on Sen. Kerry's voluntary service with distinction in Viet Nam. Reactionary attempts to attack and discredit this service, which are sure to be a major feature of their counter-attack, will serve to open the way for serious discussion of the particulars of the career of the jackanapes in the National Guard, as the natural riposte.

There is no doubt whatever the wretch did not fulfill his minimal obligations to a service he was able to enter only through political favoritism in the first place. There is excellent reason to believe he was excluded from a period of duty for failing a drug test. It adds up to something the people can only view with repugnance, and this repugnance will affect a great number of the people who, through attachment to symbols of patriotism, are inclined to vote for rightist candidates even though their personal interests would best be served by doing otherwise. These people provide the mass strength of the reactionaries at the polls, and many will be throroughly disenchanted....

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

39. I don't think this will change one vote.
Most Americans have already been brainwashed into giving the Chimperor a free pass on ANYTHING he did before he was 40.

They have the idea that he is now a completely different man. A born again man. A great leader who saved us after 9/11.

We know what he is, but most Americans have the blinders on.

41. Can Kerry bring this up in the debates?

Or will it backfire? What is considered proof?

Can Kerry literally hold up the (lame) records the whitehouse provided and say "Mr. President can you show me anywhere in here that says you fulfilled your duties?, I'll give up my next 2 minutes of speaking, we'll wait" holds out files....

Aaaah to dream.
