http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=578&u=/nm/20040801/ts_nm/security_alert_dc_7WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States raised the security alert level to high for the World Bank (news - web sites) and the International Monetary Fund (news - web sites) in Washington, the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites) and companies in the New York area on Sunday after intelligence signaled a possible al Qaeda attack.
"Reports indicate al Qaeda is targeting several specific buildings including the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in the District of Columbia," Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge told a news conference. He added that the New York Stock Exchange, Citigroup Inc buildings and the Prudential Financial building in Newark, New Jersey, were also on the list.
"The president made the final decision today, agreeing with the recommendation of (Homeland Security) Secretary Ridge to go ahead and raise the threat level," White House spokeswoman Erin Healy said
"I would like to think...the folks that work at those particular sites...would have the resolve and maybe a little bit of defiance to say...we're going to go about leading our lives," he said.
