Howie Kurtz complaining about Faux news convention coverage?
Convention Oratory, Increasingly Shoved Aside

BOSTON -- When Al Gore spoke to the Democratic convention here last Monday, Fox News Channel didn't carry it live.

Host Bill O'Reilly allowed viewers to hear the former vice president for about 40 seconds before saying: "Oh man, I wish I was out there. I would have said hey, a deficit, we've got a war on terror, we're attacked. What are you talking about?"

Whatever happened to "we report, you decide"? Shouldn't Fox viewers get to hear Gore before O'Reilly and his guests start sounding off?

(snip)

O'Reilly, responding to this reporter's criticism of the move on WashingtonPost.com, told viewers: "The newspaper pinheads claim that because we aren't covering the speeches we aren't fair. That, of course: a bunch of baloney. . . . How desperate some in the print media are to smear Fox News. In the words of Teresa Heinz Kerry, the newspaper critics can shove it."

(snip)

Most of the speeches are "propaganda," O'Reilly says. "The 'Factor' is not an infomercial. The decision was made to stick with the format, unless it's a dramatic situation."

But aren't conventions basically about speeches? Why come to Boston just to use the FleetCenter as a colorful backdrop?

"Am I, as a news analyst, to do what the parties want? That's ridiculous," says O'Reilly, who plans to cover the Republican convention the same way. "I have to make a decision on informing the audience that comes to the 'Factor' as best I can."

1. It will be interesting to see if that loudmouth talks over the Republican
speeches. Probably, but I suspect that it will be done in reverential support. He is so biased it isn't funny.

4. Let them cover the Democratic National Convention
in the manner we've all come to expect (I've just watched that "Outfoxed" DVD for the second time). But keep careful track of their antics, and save them for direct comparison to how they handle the Reptilican Convention next month.

Here's from something I had jotted down earlier (Probably came from DU):

Since Fox News is unable to rebut the basic premise of "Outfoxed," its anchors have resorted to slamming the film's technique. Fox News' convention correspondent Carl Cameron, who is portrayed in the movie sucking up to then-Governor Bush before an interview, complained "It was an unfortunate piece of editing in the movie that gave a far worse impression than the reality."

To counter this charge, director Robert Greenwald has released the entire footage of Cameron's pre-interview moments with Bush, when he didn't realize the tape was rolling. The full clip makes Cameron look even worse. He spends a full three minutes fawning over Bush. See this outrageous footage here:

That's no doubt the way they'll all cover THAT Convention.

6. Thanks for the subtitles.
My hearing is so bad that I have great difficulty following low quality audio; I was going mainly by the "body language" of that creep, and his visibly toadyish admirer. I'll view it more carefully this time, now that I have a better idea of what to listen for.

7. O'Reilly/Faux Bullshit Indicator...
Here's something I'll be watching for at the RNC informercial...

Yep, O'Reilly won't cover the speeches during his hour and neither will Hannity, BUT, I will bet you the speaker will be up in that Faux booth being interviewed by one or the other within minutes of wrapping up the speech. For example, they'll trot out J.C. Watts to do his Slappy Thomas impression...they won't cover the speech live, but Watts will be in the "No Truth" zone within that hour with O'Reilly running soundbite after soundbite.

Kurtz has no pot to piss in considering his many conflicts and his covering up of the vast media whoring going on at his own network...CNNservative.

9. Well I was upset that
I didn't get to see any of the convention and also that i don't have cable, but then i realize that CNN, FOX, etc would only make me go ballistic if i watched.

BTW, my cuz who works for one of these shill "news" conglomerates is e-mailing everybody telling them to vote for Kerry. So don't lose hope.

10. And from Howard Kurtz, no less
The more blatantly arrogant these networks get, the easier it will be to re-regulate them.... O'Reilly alone is a walking, talking case for the fairness doctrine.
