Holland Tunnel closed to Eastbound Traffic 12:01 a.m. tonite
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 10:26 PM by NightOwwl
This sounds bad. Not bad as in I believe the warnings, but bad as in BushCo is serious about preventing protesters and isolating the convention.

Easterners, how does this affect you?

From Port Authority:
As a result of the latest federal warning, commercial traffic is prohibited from entering New York City via the Holland Tunnel as a precaution effective at 12:01 a.m., Monday, August 2, 2004.

They had better come up with a McVey sized bomb someplace or Lucy is gonna have some splain'in to do!

This is a world class fraud second only to the invasion of Iraq. Twice in a lifetime is almost more than I can take.

9. Sometimes I feel we all have become characters in
a movie produced by the WH administration. Is it a mystery? An espionage film? A black comedy? A tragedy? Intrigue? You name it. It could be all of these. Who gets the girl? Who dies in the end? Is it real or is it Memorex? I wonder who wrote the script.

12. From the moment Gore had Florida "uncalled" for him
I've felt this.

Living in Bush's world demands a willing suspension of disbelief. It seems unreal, and yet it's hyperreal. It's a lifetime of my worst suspicions of how the world really is, confirmed, and raised by a magnitude of 10.

5. what all is included
in 'commercial traffic?' Just trucks, or anything that isn't a private auto? How 'bout limos?

Not that it matters to me here in Wisconsin... I was just wondering.

According to Port Authority, it's commercial traffic only.
But I'm not sure what commercial traffic consists of.

6. Commercial traffic only
The Holland Tunnel was closed for some time after 9/11 and then reopened for cars only for some time.

The whole public alert thing doesn't make much sense to me (except as a political tool).

Now if I was a terrorist (which I am not Mr. Homeland Security) I would lay low until the current frenzy is over. Then I'd go about my mission.

Maybe that's what it's all about...disrupt the planning. I don't know...there are just so many targets and ways to get to each. You can get yourself worked up about it

10. Considering that Manhattan has probably 80% commercial traffic
this isn't very practical. Particulary since it is a big fat fraud.

8. OMG, eastbound, that's the money lanes!
They must be serious if they're closing the part that generates income. Seriously, there have been various restrictions in effect since 9/11, especially for commercial traffic. I believe single-occupant vehicles were also prohibited for a time after 9/11.

13. "Commercial traffic" means vans and trucks
with commercial license plates. It does not mean residential cars.

Also to be closed tomorrow morning is the Williamsburg Bridge.

Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 05:02 AM by DoYouEverWonder
but not the Brooklyn Bridge?

The Holland tunnel, but not the Lincoln Tunnel?

What do they think that the terrorists are so stupid, that they can't figure out an alternative route?

This is just total bullshit.

14. More smoke and mirrors.
On the day bush started his war on Afghanistan (a Saturday), I drove into Manhattan via the Lincoln Tunnel. There was absolutely no security presence, NONE! Not even the standard PA police cars. There were fewer toll booth operators than usual. I whisked through at 15mph with my EZ Pass. As I entered the tunnel, I wondered what happened to everyone, including the Army dudes with their M16s and their nasty sneers who had been stationed at the tunnel post-9/11. Hmmm. What if my VW was filled with explosives? No one would know, would they? I thought.

A little over an hour later, I left Manhattan for NJ. Same thing. No security to be seen anywhere. 55 minutes later, I'm home...and I turn on the TV to see that bush has started his first war.

So I thought to myself - are they serious? Surely, bushco called NYC and gave them the heads up that they were starting their war. Surely they told them to make sure security was hefty at all the bridges, tunnels and rail crossings. Surely they feared that all those NJ-based sleeper cells had truck loads of explosives ready to roll in the tunnel in reprisal to the US attack.

Then, I remembered - it's SATURDAY! The bushies assume the terrorists are on OUR schedule, not theirs. That's why they don't work on Saturdays; that's why they pick dates important to Americans to launch their attacks, dates like July 4th...or Election Day...or Convention Week. They'd never pick a date insignificant to America...like September 11.

Fool me once...

15. They aren't serious about anything but maintaining control
of the government for the elimination Social Security and Medicare. All else means nothing. You witnessed for yourself the Potemkin nature of this game, and if you consider the last three years, we all have on a world class scale.

20. Thats because they don't have the slightest idea
what is going on. They are going off of some Arab guy that clearly has an axe to grid. Shit, this is worse than taking the word of a convicted felon on face value. They are helpless and it is pathetic. If these guys ever really strike, my guess it will be completely unexpected by these assholes, as have been the others.

16. I would assume that it means long inspection lines at..
the Lincoln Tunnel and GW Bridge. The only people seriously pissed will be the truck and van drivers. Many of them are paid by the trip, not by the hour, and they'll lose half of what little money they make.

The Holland Tunnel already restricts trucks over 12' high and sends them up to the Lincoln Tunnel. This is simply because that tunnel is the older, and smaller, one. The Holland Tunnel also periodically gets its own restrictions because of downtown traffic problems. The restriction on single car occupancy during rush hour, for instance, was because of the WTC work and construction traffic.

Going over the GW bridge earlier today, I noticed more cops on the lookout and several stopped cars. This is not the first time, and they periodically pull security checks at the bridges and tunnels. Airport entrances, too. Some of this is simply overtime padding, and some of it for alerts that weren't announced.
