1. One of the big reasons Thomas Jefferson was elected...
Was the public's overwhelming disgust with the ALien & Sedition Acts, John Adams' version of the Patriot Act. Jefferson vehemently opposed those acts, and this helped to spur on his victory in 1800.

The FIRST Democrat elected supporting free speech over government oppression!:D
