Monday 02 August 2004

Najaf, Iraq - US troops surrounded the home of wanted Shiite Muslim radical leader Moqtada Sadr in the central Iraqi holy city of Najaf, an AFP correspondent witnessed.

US armoured vehicles, backed by Iraqi security forces, cordoned off the Al-Zahra neighbourhood, where Sadr's home is located in the eastern part of the city.

Smoke was seen rising from the area Monday amid the sound of heavy gunfire, mortar fire and rocket-propelled grenade explosions.

1. Sounds like a bad idea
I think arresting or killing Sadr would be akin to sticking your face into a hornet's nest.

3. It couldn't be a military blunder.
I say, it could be a very large military blunder. Especially if he wasn't home.

7. I think US military are working hand in hand with Allawi....
and Allawi sees Sadr as a future threat and wants him gone...dead or alive.
