women are in Iraq. No discrimination except for the powerful and wealthy (as usual).

2. well--I say it is only fair.
It would be discrimination to put men on front lines and let the women sit at home. Didn't Clinton end some of the discrimination in the military? I know that he supported equal treatment of all.

18. I agree
and I've got draft-aged daughters. I have made arrangements for them to emigrate if they want to to avoid killing for *.

19. I say it is Not fair
and I tell you why E.R.A. has not passed. One of the arguments used against passing E.R.A. by the flying monkey right was that women would be drafted.

The first man to die in the Revolutionary War was an African American man named Crispus Attucks, African Americans fought in every War this country had since for freedoms they didn't not have my brothers and sisters did not get their Civil Rights until 1964!

I say hell no, no way do I approve of women being drafted when E.R.A. has not passed! Women still do not have their full rights in this country until E.R.A. is passed.

What woman will we ask to be the last woman to die in Wars (for the corporations) that she's drafted into before we give Equal Rights to her under the Constitution?

A link to the history of E.R.A. which btw was first introduced into Congress in 1923 and it still hasn't passed!
http://www.now.org/issues/economic/cea/history.html

So for every congress critter that wants to spout off that they want to included women in the draft they can get off their butts and pass the E.R.A. or they can forget about drafting women!

3. Hope so
It would make everybody think a lot harder about "preventive" wars. And I say that as a female.

4. What I have seen and heard
the plans are 18 to 34 - men and women - hard to go to Canada - and minimal deferrments - reports I've seen on the net - don't know how true but sound believable to me.

5. In a Bush Administration, I say no
They may want to, but the people most opposed to drafting women are not feminist organizations, but the religious right. They never much liked the idea of women in the military in the first place, and drafting women would only enahnce the standing of women in the military establishment. They don't want that, as they believe in strict gender roles for men and women: the men should fight the wars, while women should man the homefront and serve as dutiful wives and mothers.

If Kerry had to bring back the draft to clean up Bush's mess, I think women would be drafted, but not for combat roles. I don't think that's a fight Kerry wants to pick, nor should he.

6. You know if bush tries to bring it back sans women
the lawsuits will stop the draft on its tracks....

So I say BRING IT ON

For the record if we should need a draft, this should apply to ALL,

7. EVERYBODY'S going

Regardless of gender or marital/familial/employment/educational status. The Bush regime is building 14 permanent military bases in Iraq even as we speak (the better to invade the rest of the Middle East with, my dear.) They've also made some noises about a "special skills draft." But if that will be anything like their "free speech zones," you can count on "breathing unassisted" qualifying as a special skill. If you're under the age of 35, watch out--a Bush victory could have you ducking bullets as soon as next spring!

10. People with children will simply have to make "special arrangements"
Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 10:39 PM by rocknation
That's what welfare mothers who have to work for their benefits are expected to do--why can't the draftees?

than be drafted any day.

14. They should.
I wanted to join the military when I was eighteen, but back then daddy had to sign the papers. He refused. I moved on and didn't think about it after. I think the draft should include all Americans in capacities they can fill. It would take some intelligent person to think this out.

15. IMHO, Yes women will be drafted
They won't be drafted for comat roles. Instead it will be an event similar to WWII where women stay in the states for supportive roles or go to the bases and provide support.

I also believe that If you have special skills (computer, previous military, foriegn language) you could be top on the list.

17. Are you kidding? They sent a 68-year old guy to Iraq.

If Kerry doesn't get in we'll probably have to start drafting 10-year-old kids. Not only are they willing to work for less, the cuts to the education budget make them more available. What did you think they meant when they invaded Iraq and said they'd leave no kid behind? (Although it might have been a misstatement--with the Abu Ghraib sodomy reports it might have been that they'd leave no kid's behind.)
