"Now that it has been confirmed that the intel supporting this weekends terror warnings in NY and DC was 3 TO 4 YEARS OLD, do you feel that the Bush Administration was using the terror warnings for political purposes?"

This has nothing to do with Dean - and everything to do with the fact that the intel was 3 TO 4 YEARS OLD.

50/50 is still very damaging to Bush's credibility, because:

(1) People have a hard time believing their commander-in-chief would "wag the dog" - particularly about possible attacks on AMERICAN soil. There's such a taboo against "the boy who cried wolf" that Kerry couldn't even accuse Bush of this - instead, he had to say "We're taking him at his word."

Still, 50% of the people don't "take Bush at his word".

(2) The CNN poll was phrased in terms of what DEAN said. So in some people's mind, the question comes down to "Who do you believe more, Dean or Bush." The fact that half the voters (so far) side with "Dean the Extreme" reflects VERY poorly on Bush.

Now, thanks front-page articles in Tuesday's New York Times and Washington Post, we learn that Dean's suspicions were well-founded. So CNN could actually have left Dean out of the question altogether, and simply asked:

"Now that we know that that reports about Al Qaeda casing buildings in NY and DC were 3 or 4 years old, do you think the Bush Administration was using the terror warnings for political purposes?"

If they had left Dean out of this, the split would probably be a lot worse against Bush than the 50/50 we're seeing so far.


So all in all, it's VERY damaging to Bush that 50 percent of the people agree with Dean's speculation that Bush might be wagging the dog here.

And let's not forget - these terror warnings now have to be retracted, or at least seriously modified - since it's now been revealed that they were based on intel that was 3 to 4 years old. So Dean was right.

I really don't WANT to believe they're political. I thought about this all day yesterday, thought and thought, and in the end, the timing of it just was too. durn. fishy. Three and a half years, and we haven't had this kind of alert, and we get it 2 days after Kerry speaks? Dr. Dean did not categorically state that this alert was politically motivated. He said it could be, but he didn't know for sure. The reason he thought it could be is the same reason many other people think so: the administration releases terror alerts at a time to create a news distraction with very little detail to support it. This has been a consistent pattern.

What is important about this story is not whether this specific alert is politically motivated, but the perception that it could be. Americans don't trust this administration to be honest with them about matters of public safety; Americans believe their leaders are playing politics with national defense. That being the case, Americans should remove the Bushies from power.
