I need help with a Reagan question please...
In my daily argument with the Repugs I work with, one
says that the reason Clinton's budget posted a surplus was because Reagan got people off of welfare.
Can anyone shed some light on this please?
Thanks

1. LOL
make THEM prove it. It's pure bullshit.

Ask them how much money was spent on welfare. Ask them what the budgets were throughout the 80's and 90's. Ask them how many people were on welfare for each year through each president's terms.

2. Then why didn't it work for the first Bush??
There were 8 years from the time Reagan left and we actually got a surplus.

Kicking them off ain't what did it. Finding them jobs and collecting taxes did.

5. actually Clinton was the one that passed
welfare reform not Reagan.

And I am still dead set against what Clinton did--please don't flame me--My reasoning is that the Democratic party built their base by helping the poor (FDR) and we were once famous for our war on poverty (LBJ). Now--we are hardly even talking about the poor. What new programs to help the poor were included in this years platform? I want us to get back to being the party of compassion. PLEASE. For the good of all.

Peace

9. Flame you?
I agree one hundred percent. If caring for those who need help is not what democrats are about why would I want to be one?

4. This is a new one
Usually they say Reagan's tax cuts leaped over the stock market crash of '87, leaped over Bush's economy, and landed smack dab in the middle of the 90's.

Welfare reform was under Clinton. Most people that got off welfare did so because of a good economy and additional health, child care, education, job training and other programs. The budget surplus was from increased revenues due to an improved economy and increased taxes on the wealthy.

They are just getting wilder by the day.

7. Try hysterical laughter.
Reagan enabled corporate welfare to grow to unprecedented amounts with his goofy and totally discredited "trickle down" schemes that the present infestation of the white house is trying to resurrect.

Also known as "borrow and spend". Cut social programs and borrow to finance tax cuts for the wealthy and the bloated military.
