Educate my dumbass-what are the primaries about on Sept 7th

I heard on freeper radio today (that's the only kind of radio we get here in Tucson) that we have primaries in September (the 7th if I am not mistaken)

What are those all about?

Mind you I've only voted once in my life and that was 4 years ago so....
