Limbaugh, pals get liberally thrashed
http://portlandtribune.com/archview.cgi?id=25525

Attention, Rush Limbaugh and everyone else who thought that liberal talk radio couldn’t work: Portland is proving otherwise. At least if you believe the folks who measure listenership.
The spring Arbitron ratings show that KPOJ (620 AM), which carries the upstart Air America Network with Al Franken, Randi Rhodes, et al., has made huge strides since its March 30 launch.
In the important 25-54 age category, KPOJ ranks third in the Portland market with a 4.9 share (which means a 4.9 percent share of the listening audience). It’s ahead of all other AM stations and finished behind top-ranked country-music KUPL (98.7 FM) and No. 2-ranked adult rock station KINK (101. 9 FM).
In a three-month period, KPOJ went from 12,000 listeners to almost 80,000 listeners per week, with little promotion or marketing. Previously KPOJ had been airing golden oldies, drawing a 1 percent share.

3. KAPOW!
Of course, the Portland market seems like a no-brainer for this format but still this rocks!

Country? :puke: (Except for Willie & Johnny Cash.)

I listen to AAR here in Portland every chance I get.

8. Within 90 days
I read in Monday's Peach Buzz in the AJC that Air America just hired Mike Malloy and the president of Air America, Jon Sinton, who is based in Atlanta, says he hopes to have a radio station for Air America in Atlanta within 90 days!!!!!!! Finally!!! Suck on that Neal Boortz.

6. Little inside dope here folks.

The guy who owns this newspaper also owns 860 KPAM, the
station that carries Hannity.

That radio station started out balanced and kinda neat,
but they didn't give it a chance and after a few months
took a hard, hard right with the addition of Hannity,
Larry Elder, et. al.

15. True
Pamplin is sinking his little Portland media empire by swinging so far to the right.

I despise the Tribune. It's free, which is slightly more than it is worth.

12. Still waiting
in Detroit, well Ann Arbor, for Air America. If he can out perform O'liely, I fail to understand why more stations don't pick him up. Of course, it might be a business decision. Is Air America an all or nothing enterprise? Meaning, do stations need to pick up the entire network, or can they buy individual shows? If it's the latter, than that may explain why so few markets have air america. I think Franken could syndicate nationally overnight. However, a lot of the other shows lack the talent. Which is a shame. I can't listen to streaming internet at work, and I don't feel like listening to the replay at night.

13. Yes! Air America
in either Detroit or Ann Arbor would be great! So says ellie, waiting patiently in NW Ohio.

16. KINK is the old hippie station here
Very commercial, make no mistake. Unlistenable unless you still want to hear Bruce Hornsby for the one bazillionth time.

9. Let's wait until they earn a profit before we claim it can "work"
Or at least avoid losing money hand over fist.

Decent ratings in Portland do not support the salaries of the level of talent they've hired.

18. A "profit" - Surely you've heard the term before?
Or at least wait to call it a success until they start losing a manageable amount of money. They started up claiming they had enough capital to operate WITHOUT ADVERTISING for the first two years. A month or six weeks later they were missing payrolls and talent was working without pay (and they were begging for more capital).

Talent on this level does not work for the kind of money you bring in from modest ratings in the 24th largest radio market in the country.

11. People are ready to hear something different.
Air America gives them that option. It's a tough demographic though. I wish them luck.
