1. the only radio reaching where I live is a counrty western station
that can be heard if you are in your car as opposed to in your house and a static filled rock oldies out of Canada if the wind is just right.

Without web broadcasts, I would still think Jackson was president!

2. best way to go is XM Radio channel 167
It's one of the few reasons I bought an XM radio so I could get AAR over the road and not just over the net.

7. Does XM cover all AAR programs?
The reason I haven't gone with satellite is the partial coverage of programs, whether it be NPR (with Sirius, not covering Morning Edition and All Things Considered) or the partial programming of AAR. Plus, I think both missed the boat by not focusing on the highly portable technology (i.e., walkman type devises) as opposed to stationary receivers for home and car.

15. In the evening they put on Alan Colms
That bastard, I don't like his show. Hopefully Malloy replaced him.

17. Sirius
Edited on Tue Aug-03-04 01:17 PM by Wheaty
Sirius covers all of AAR. Including Malloy. XM has Ed Shultz and Alan Colmes on instead of Randi and Mike.

Not allowing Morning Edition and All Things Considered on Satellite Radio is a deliberate effort by NPR to allow exclusive coverage for the local NPR affiliates on terrestrial radio so the stations still get listeners and stay in business.

As far as portable. Well the main problem is technology at this time. Both Sirius and XM are working on portable products.

Keep in mind you are dealing with Satellites and you have to have an unobstructed view to the sky for the most part. A satellite radio won't work underground (like in a subway) or has a hard time working indoors without an antenna near a proper facing window or even if your car is parked under a highway overpass.

These kind of issues make portability hard.

19. No they don't. Sirius does.
Sirius has it's own dedicated AAR station. XM only plays 1 hour of Randi Rhodes, and who knows how much Malloy. Both of those are on Sirius. I listened to Malloy last night on it.

Sirius Left is a second station that plays Colmes, Hartman & Schultz, and Young Turks, who are pretty good (Like Morning Sedition). Also there's Sirius OUT-Q that plays Signorelli and John McMullen (who is really good too...Better than Signorelli).

Just got back from a road trip around the north west. I had no signal loss except for tunnels. 4 hours of Randi from Wyoming border to Boise Id. without changing any stations, or searching the dial. It's cool! I put my Ipod away (never thought I'd do that)

3. I stream it live
I hope they get credit for that. I have it on (loud) while at work. It's been a sanity-saver for those of us stranded in repuke-run hellholes like me.

4. My Mom bought Sirius yesterday, took it to work and set it up but can't
get reception so she is going to return it. The computers at her work don't come with audio chips so she can't stream. She is so sick of the all RW radio all the time but I guess she has no option other than music.

6. Might be a external card solution.
Seems that someone would make a blackbox with a USB connection to plug into the computer and connections into your Sirius tuner.

13. If anyone knows of a solution, let me know but, as far as I know, there
isn't one. She does come to DU throughout the day so I think that helps maintain sanity and keep her updated.

23. Thank you. The building is just two stories and she has a corner cube
with windows on two sides so she thought she would have a pretty good chance of getting reception (the windows are sealed shut so putting the antenna outside isn't an option).

25. she's out of luck
the satellite is almost straight up, instead of to the SW

dunno if they have ground repeaters like XM

I had to put mine outside, and shoot through branches, so I lose signal a lot

it points NW at about 75degrees up, so inside does not work

I tried it

29. Here's a hardware solution
I'd suggest printing this out and going to your local computer warehouse of choice (Best Buy, CompUSA, etc) and they can show you comparable products...:

8. Interesting poll results so far.
If this reflects the general population, AAR might have far more significant market share than people realize.

10. Yep. Definitely shows there are a lot of people who probably want it but
can't get it over the airwaves.

technically, I could have selected the combo option since we have XM, but hubby doesn't let me listen to AAR in the car so I figured it didn't count. *l*

I think I have sold him on C-Span radio for those times when he wants the news.
