So we're in Quincy Market, where Tweety has the MSNBC tent/stage, and I'm standing near a young girl who is holding out a CNN paper fan for him to autograph. He, of course, comes over to the girl because she's young and attractive, and starts sort of teasing her, saying he isn't going to sign it because it's from the other network. Eventually, he does. While he's doing this, I nod toward the stage, where Joe "Dead Intern" Scarborough is holding forth, and ask Tweets, "Why does he still have a show and Phil Donohue was kicked off?" Tweety looks side to side in an intentional way and says, "No comment. No comment." "Seriously," I said, "his ratings are so small that you can't even measure them, and they keep HIM on and kick Donohue off who had much higher ratings." Tweety: That's not it. He was becoming the identity of the network. Me: Whaaat? That's impossible. He was dumped by the network brass for being an anti-war voice. Tw: No, really, he was becoming the identity of the network. That was the only reason. The other stuff had nothing to do with it. Me: While I have your attention, when are you going to start questioning this administration? Tw: What do you mean (rolling eyes). That's ALL I do? Me: Really? All I see is you allowing them to say the most outrageous things unchallenged. Tw: You should watch more often. Sometimes I'm the only one questioning them. Me: I watch enough to know that they say whatever they want and get away with it.
At this point, enough people tuned into the discussion that he just moved along and started some nonsensical conversation with another "fan," but I thought the discussion supports some DUer's contention that Tweety resented Donohue and wanted to be the network star. That's my only real convention story. Part of my goal in going was to confront media types with their shameless whoring for Bush. I had a few opportunities, and even got a few media underlings (younger producers, cameramen and such) to acknowledge right-wing, corporate pressure. And, after watching them in action for a week, the media whores disgust me now more than ever.
