HOLLYWOOD VS. AMERICA
1st Linda Ronstadt, now Don Henley booed
'We used to be able to have civil debate in this country. Not anymore'

with Linda Ronstadt, who gained national attention after alienating much of her audience with a song dedication to leftist filmmaker Michael Moore.

At the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, Calif., on Thursday Henley made several political comments between songs, according to a report in the Orange County Register.

One comment began: "Given what my good friend Linda Ronstadt …" but was interrupted immediately with a chorus of boos from the audience.

According to the Register, Henley responded: "Whoops – Orange County," adding, "We used to be able to have civil debate in this country. Not anymore."

Orange County is known as a politically conservative area of Southern California.
Later in the concert, Henley, a former member of the Eagles rock band, suggested his next song could be sung as a duet by President Bush and Vice President Cheney. Written by Randy Newman, "Political Science" has the U.S. dropping nukes on nearly every other part of the world.

One of the lyrics is: "They don't respect us so let's surprise them. We'll drop the big one and pulverize them."
" really blindsided everyone," Joshua Owen of Long Beach told the local paper. "There was booing. Some people headed for the exits."

Henley performs tonight in Saratoga, Calif., with future concerts on his summer tour <http://www.donhenley.com/tour/tour.html> slated to include Washington, Alaska, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Virginia and Texas.

As WorldNetDaily reported, </news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=39521> last month Ronstadt's onstage tribute to Moore at the Aladdin in Las Vegas was booed by concertgoers in attendance, hundreds of whom walked out. Her action prompted Aladdin President Bill Timmins, who attended the concert, to ban Ronstadt from the property. Staff checked her out of her room and escorted her to her tour bus.

1. There were five or six freepers there...
who booed and perhaps walked out. What about the other thousand in attendance/ This is the usual bullshit. A handful of those skanky dog turds create a disturbance and it's made out to be a national movement.

3. RW spin on this story - 1st - the source is RW
2nd- Ronstadt story as reported and regurgitated ad nauseum was FALSE (see various DU discussions)

Today in Tulsa on KFAQ 1170am (FAUX radio), DelGiorno's sit-in and others discussed this.

They hit hard and heavy at 'civil debate'-----'democrats have never had a civil debate, don't know the meaning of the term ...... just remember Whoppi Goldberg.'

Do they all have Alzheimers or something????? Dixie Chicks, Reagan movie on CBS, 8 years of republican 'civil debate' about Clinton..

Every minute they spew a new lie and/or spin.......no one can ever catch up with the lies.......

6. The story is quoting from the O.C. Register - a right wing newspaper
I posted the O.C. Register's story about Don Henley several days ago. The Orange County Register is one of the nation's most right of center daily newspapers.

".......Henley miffs O.C. fans by talking politics

The Orange County Register, July 30, 2004

COSTA MESA – Singer Don Henley drew a chorus of boos from fans at the Pacific Amphitheatre after he made several political comments between songs during his concert Thursday night, becoming the latest performer to elicit such a negative reaction. Two weeks ago, Linda Ronstadt touched off a disturbance at a show in Las Vegas when she dedicated a song to filmmaker Michael Moore. Fans at the Aladdin Hotel and Casino booed, threw drinks and ripped down posters in the lobby, prompting the management to escort the singer from the premises and bar her from performing there again.

Henley, referring to that incident Thursday night, began a sentence with, "Given what my good friend Linda Ronstadt ," but was silenced as the amphitheatre erupted in boos. He responded: "Whoops - Orange County," adding, "We used to be able to have civil debate in this country Not anymore." Henley then suggested his next song could be a duet sung by President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. He launched into Randy Newman's darkly satirical tune, "Political Science," which imagines the United States dropping nuclear weapons on the rest of the world.

"He really blindsided everyone," said Joshua Owen of Long Beach, who had taken a group of employees to the concert and was upset by the political content. "There was booing. Some people headed for the exits." ........"

12. Doubt it's true that people left and booed
everyone knows Henley is very politically outspoken. Anyone who would pay to see him and doesn't expect him to say something is a "moran." Every time I've seen him he's said something. It's not that I'm a huge fan, it's just that he's played with a lot of artists that I am a fan of so I've probably seen him live 4 or 5 times. Just about every time he's made his views known.

Today was debut of their new single American Idiot

All lyrics not available yet, but here is a snip:

Don't wanna be an American idiot
Don't want a nation under the new media
(...)
Don't wanna be an American idiot
One nation controlled by the media
Information age of hysteria
This is going out to idiot America

I heard the tune on the way home, need to hear it again to get the lyrics down pat...or else wait until tomorrow when you young folk with better hearing than me gets it done ;)

15. someone should create a "fucked by bush league amerika" tour
and have all the musicians who have been booed do sets.

I bet it would be a big success, and they could donate some of the money from the concert to liberal causes.

let's see...

John Mellencamp
Dixie Chicks
Linda Ronstadt
Don Henley

who else? or do only ugly white male fucks act like this as fans?

probably others I haven't heard of, and probably other musicians would want to get in on it just because.

and someone could write a song about being fucked in bush amerika and they could all sing it together at the end of the show.

between acts, while bands are setting up, they could show films like outfoxed and also have a voter registration table.

25. There's Supposed To Be A ACT Tour In October...
I'm looking for the details. It was announced on CNN today there was going to be a 40 city tour starting Oct. 1 to "register voters" featuring:

Bruce Springsteen
REM
Dixie Chicks
John Mellencamp
Dave Matthews
Eddie Veder

and a bunch of others. I wouldn't be surprised if Neil Young is added as well as a ton of guest stars...like Rondstadt, Henley and more. Sounds like it's gonna be a great demonstration of the positive compared to all the hate we'll be hearing from the wingnuts as their ship continues to sink.

If anyone has more details on this concert, please post it...we're definitely gonna see it when it rolls through Chicago (and they better...even if we're safely Blue)

17. LOL......I've been singing that song all week....here are all the lyrics..
No one likes us-I don't know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
But all around, even our old friends put us down
Let's drop the big one and see what happens

We give them money-but are they grateful?
No, they're spiteful and they're hateful
They don't respect us-so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them

Asia's crowded and Europe's too old
Africa is far too hot
And Canada's too cold
And South America stole our name
Let's drop the big one
There'll be no one left to blame us

We'll save Australia
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo
We'll build an All American amusement park there
They got surfin', too

Boom goes London and boom Paree
More room for you and more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We'll set everybody free
You'll wear a Japanese kimono
And there'll be Italian shoes for me

They all hate us anyhow
So let's drop the big one now
Let's drop the big one now

describing none other than the media's reaction to the Linda Ronstadt incident.

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
Comes on at five
She can tell you ’bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
It’s interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry

20. I hope artists keep doing this
Small-minded people sometimes need to bopped on the heads repeatedly in order to get a clue. They've heard disinformation spewed so often, that their attitudes have become emotionally entrenched. When their favorite musicians and celebrities keep speaking out- and saying things contrary to their beliefs, it causes cognitive dissonance, which unfortunately is a necessary first step toward getting them to actually think semi-critically.

Sad but true.

Isn't Orange County more or less a paradise for right-wingers of all extremes? Wouldn't even a few of them turn up at a Don Henley concert in said county? Ah, well, this too shall pass. Maybe someday the John Birch Society will be an unpleasant memory...

26. Mock outrage!
Anyone complaining about hearing outspoken political views at a Don Henley concert deserves to lose the $500 or so they spent on tickets. Henley has always been politically outspoken, why did his fans expect him not to be?

Next thing you know, some Bruce Springsteen fan is gonna bitch about what he said during a show!

Don Henley has a history of gaining utter enjoyment in pissing off some of his crowds. He has played shows with his back to the audience. Not knockin' him - I love the Eagles, though I hate that I'd have to take out a mortgage to see him in concert. But Don Henley says what he wants, and doesn't pander.

The 'Orang County' line sounds hilarious!

Incidentaly, why the hell was he booed for mentioning Linda Ronstad? They are longtime friends, and it was a Henley song that got her in hot water. This is all an example of what Bill Maher calls 'fake outrage'. Nobody's pissed about it, but they want to be, and they want everyone else to be.

29. Henley's Not my taste
Edited on Wed Aug-04-04 01:45 AM by buddyhollysghost
in fact, he's pretty much thought of as a whiner to many musicians i play with, and his songs are pretty patronizing and/or negative toward women. Still, I admire him for having some halfway decent beliefs and for sticking up for them. Sounds like some bored freepers stocked up on tickets....

Edited to say that "I Will Not Go Quietly" is the best of his songs for these times and us DUers....

32. Reason #2 to like Don Henley
I admit I'm one of the elitists who dissed the Eagles. Damn Gram Parsons for OD'ing & leaving the field of Country Rock to the Cocaine Cowboys of Hollywood. OK, some of their tunes are fine--"Take It Easy" on the radio makes me want to put the top down & head West (never mind that I don't have a convertible).

My respect for him increased when I read this gem, dug up by John Nova Lomax of The Houston Press: East Texas native Don Henley says he is to blame for the state of modern country radio. Speaking to the L.A. Times, the off-and-on Eagle said that the likes of Faith Hill and Shania Twain are outgrowths of his band's sound, and he is sorry that they have knocked George Jones and Merle Haggard off the air. "It's our fault, I'm so sorry, I apologize to the entire universe," Henley said…

http://www.houstonpress.com/issues/2002-02-28/racket.html

So, good for Don.
