Is anyone familiar with Operation: BOJINKA ?
This is from January, 2000 - They were going to assassinate Bill Clinton. Could Clinton not have been serious about al Qaeda??

EXPLODING WATCHES
By decrypting Yousef’s computer files, investigators uncovered the details of a plot to destroy numerous U.S. air carriers in a simultaneous operation. Code named “BOJINKA,” the plot involved using a timing device made from an altered Databank watch. Flight schedules and a decrypted letter found on the computer indicated that five participants were to simultaneously plant devices on flights to the United States. After the bombings, four of the participants were to return to Karachi, Pakistan. The fifth was to return to Qatar.
Over the next few days, the U.S. ordered increased security on airliners flying over the Pacific. A month later, Yousef was arrested in Pakistan

1. Randi Rhodes talks about it often
I'm surprised it doesn't get more play. Clinton foiled a plot.

4. Filipino policewoman busted Al Qaeda.
She heard a report of firecreackers going off and investigated; there might've been a fire. Anyway, the officer discovered some suspicious characters and the mother load of Al Qaeda stuff, explosives to computers. On a laptop, the police discovered plans to hijack US commercial airliners over the Pacific and crash them into West Coast cities. The information was shared with the United States. The year was 1995, I believe. I imagine Richard Clarke knew about it. Bush and Cheney, I'd bet, would SWEAR they never heard of it.

5. Found this in my bookmarks
Very informative article. http://www.mediamonitors.net/mosaddeq36.html

<snip>
Western intelligence had been aware of plans for such terrorist attacks on U.S. soil as early as 1995. Both the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had detailed information about the possible use of hijack/suicide attacks by terrorists connected to Osama bin Laden. The New York Times reported that:

?In 1994, two jetliners were hijacked by people who wanted to crash them into buildings, one of them by an Islamic militant group. And the 2000 edition of the FAA?s annual report on Criminal Acts Against Aviation, published this year, said that although Osama bin Laden ?is not known to have attacked civil aviation, he has both the motivation and the wherewithal to do so,? adding, ?Bin Laden?s anti-Western and anti-American attitudes make him and his followers a significant threat to civil aviation, particularly to U.S. civil aviation.??<4>

Moreover, the U.S. intelligence community was aware of bin Laden?s specific intentions to use hijacked civilian planes as weapons. In this regard, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that:

?The FBI had advance indications of plans to hijack U.S. airliners and use them as weapons, but neither acted on them nor distributed the intelligence to local police agencies. From the moment of the September 11th attacks, high-ranking federal officials insisted that the terrorists? method of operation surprised them. Many stick to that story. Actually, elements of the hijacking plan were known to the FBI as early as 1995 and, if coupled with current information, might have uncovered the plot.?<5>

Operation Bojinka's bombshell

In 1995, Philippine policewoman helped crack terror cell

By Matthew Brzezinski
SPECIAL TO THE STAR

MANILA — It was already evening, here on the other side of the international date line, when the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Aida Fariscal had gone to bed early on Sept. 11, only to be awakened by a frantic colleague. "Quick," he instructed, "turn on your television."

The footage of the hijacked airliner bursting into flame made Fariscal bolt upright. "Oh my God," she gasped. "Bojinka."

For the retired Philippine police officer, that word and the nightmare scenario it evoked had receded into distant memory these past six years. Sometimes weeks went by without her even thinking about the terrorist plot she had foiled so long ago. But there it was, after all this time, unfolding live on her television. "I thought, at first," she tells me, "that I was having a bad dream, or that I was watching a movie." But as the burning towers came crashing down under their own weight, disbelief turned to anger. "I still don't understand," she says, "how it could have been allowed to happen."

We are having lunch in a busy Manila shopping centre, not far from the Dona Josefa Apartments, where it all started, where she — and the CIA and the FBI — first heard the words "Operation Bojinka." Fariscal has insisted on a corner table, so she can keep an eye on the other patrons and the shoppers beyond the restaurant's greasy glass partition. Old habits, she explains, die hard, and, after a life of fighting crime, she always takes precautions, especially now that she is off the force, a widowed grandmother living on a pension in a small one-bedroom apartment.

She seems bitter, and surprisingly fragile in her hoop earrings and pink lipstick. She is bitter that the generals in the Philippine high command hogged all the credit for Bojinka (which means loud bang in Serbo-Croatian), while all she received was $700 (U.S.) and a trip to Taiwan. She is bitter that the Americans apparently didn't take the foiled plot seriously enough. But most of all, she is angry that, in the end, her hunch didn't save thousands of lives. "I can't get those images," she says of the World Trade Center wreckage, "out of my mind."
