How did the network news you watch treat the "old intel" story?
If you watch any network (or cable "news").

ABC WNT lead with the revelations from the former Gitmo prisoners from England-this usually is the kind of story that is their third or expanded fourth story. Then, ironically, a story on the Lyndie England trial.

The third story was about the terror alert and it wasn't until 12 minutes into the telecast that the mention, as an aside, that the information was at least three years old. Terror alerts or terror stories usually dominate the telecast.

The link below doesn't even mention it.

Aaron Brown last night was largely about the re-opening of the Statue of Liberty (understandable as he MC'ed the event) and the terror alert story mention the "old intel" with several

"..yes but the have updated this information since January of this year"

"...but it has been updated"

type lines.

So how was it covered on shows you watched?

1. NBC played it pretty straight
It was the opening story. Gave out the facts, played Ridge's response. But then, they did a great story on how much money these alerts cost the economy.

2. Good
The ABC story on Gitmo was an "Exclusive" but they almost always have something like that after the top headlines.

3. Did you see Clinton on Letterman last night?
He said he thought the intel was good and the alerts weren't politically motivated. I was surprised by his comments, but he backed them up by saying Al Qaeda takes years to plan things, is very patient, and will wait if the time is not right.

4. Taped it watching it tonight after work
Clintion, for the most part, has relegated himself to the "last President" nice role. I heard in one interview that before traveling overseas or doing interviews he checks with the WH to see what US policy is so that he won't step on it.

Once a POTUS has been out for a while they have more leeway to make statements-see Carter.
