IL GOP to choose between two Black candidates (Keyes & Barthwell)
This is too funny. Keyes does not live in Illinois and Barthwell is a former junkie who got a reprimand for lewd behavior. LOL

GOP narrows Senate hopefuls to 2

And then there were two.

But only one of them has the support of the most powerful Republican in Illinois.

Republicans searching for a U.S. Senate candidate to go up against Democrat Barack Obama narrowed their search Tuesday to two African Americans -- former White House deputy drug czar Andrea Grubb Barthwell and two-time presidential hopeful Alan Keyes.

The surprise announcement came late in the evening, after nearly seven hours of interviewing candidates and wrangling over their pluses and minuses.

1. I thought Keyes was ineligible?
Something about needing to live in IL for 30 days prior to the voter registration deadline, which is at the end of August thus no dice.

3. We are talking about the Illinois GOP here. . .
. . .the same group that played hardball to get Bush on the ballot even though he would not be nominated until after the deadline for him to be placed on it.

2. Lest you think there's any window-dressing going on...
State Sen. Dave Syverson, a panel member from Rockford, ... insisted the committee did not choose the two because both are African Americans, like Obama. ... "It just turned out to be that way," Syverson said. "We don't look at color the way the Democrats do...."

Riiiiiight.

4. Meet Andrea Grubb Barthwell

The Chicago Sun-Times obtained a copy of the internal inquiry into whether Barthwell created a "hostile workplace." An agency spokeswoman confirmed its accuracy and said Barthwell was sent to anti-sexual harassment training and Equal Employment Opportunity training. "The matter was addressed to the satisfaction of all parties," said agency spokeswoman Jennifer de Vallance.

Barthwell said the Dec. 19, 2002, office party was to celebrate the holidays and workers with birthdays that month. She admitted to participating in what she described as "light banter back and forth" after a heterosexual worker mistakenly said he had to walk his "boyfriend's dog."

"He meant to say 'my daughter's boyfriend's dog,'" Barthwell said. "One of his co-workers picked up on it and teased him. . . . And I engaged in the banter also.

Barthwell also said she is recovering from addictions to alcohol, cocaine, prescription drugs and marijuana, but has not used any of those substances for 20 years.

Just when it started to drag, somebody began playing a piano, and we looked up to see that the pianist was John Borling, the retired Air Force general who was among the distant also-rans in the primary but ran his name up the flagpole again Tuesday anyway.

"For two silver dollars, who can identify this one?" said Borling. "I've been working 40 years on Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C Sharp Major, and I haven't gotten there yet."

Borling started taking requests.

"John, if you don't make it as candidate, I know a piano bar on the North Side that could use you," said another candidate, a sick puppy named Andy Martin, who I first encountered in 1978, when he was a sick puppy named Anthony Robert Martin-Trigona. He was a fringe candidate for the Senate that year, too.

9. Keyes will never do it. He has too much integrity.
The man's political beliefs are abominable, but you can't say he's not for real. Probably why the corporatist neocon GOP won't give him the time of day.
