Bush blog posts offensive article attacking pro-Kerry firefighters, Teresa Heinz Kerry

http://www.georgewbush.com/blog/archives/week_2004_08_01.html#001385

Ellipses are used to cut out the offending sections, but the full article posted on NRO contains the following quotes:

“Generally speaking, the likelihood that a firefighter will vote for John Kerry is inversely proportional to the number of fires he has actually fought. Witness all those T-shirted "Fire Fighters for Kerry" you saw at the convention. A little soft around the middle some of them were, weren't they? Do you think some of them could haul a hose pack up 50 flights of stairs? I'm not betting on it. I'm guessing the only fires many of them have seen lately were at IAFF barbecues.”

“Granted, some firefighters, even some who actually fight fires, will no doubt vote for Kerry. So will some cops. But most will vote for President Bush, and as NRO has no firefighter on the payroll I will attempt to speak for both groups in explaining why this is so. (I hope the smoke-eaters won't object.) First, cops and firefighters are inherently conservative in that they understand the importance of following society's rules. Unlike John Kerry, they don't find "nuance" in every question that confronts them.”

“Nearly every call to 9-1-1 is the result of someone concluding that these rules, be they the criminal laws or the fire codes, can be ignored. They did a good job of hiding it last week, but the Democrats are the party of libertinism, the price of which is well known to those who come when people call for help.”

“Even with the piles of dough they're sitting on, both George Bush and Dick Cheney still come across as Regular Guys, the kind of men you might find hanging around the fire station or the detective squad room. And with his recent suggestion to Pat Leahy on how he might spend his idle time, the vice president climbed several notches on the Regular Guy scale. John Kerry, on the other hand, owing to his valorous service in Vietnam, might have been a Regular Guy years ago, but he surrendered his membership when he came home to join the Jane Fonda crowd and brand his former comrades as war criminals. And whatever tenuous grip he may have had on Regular Guy status since then was lost when he married his current wife. Old-fashioned notions of chivalry prevent me from offering my full opinion on her here, but Regular Guys do not under any circumstances marry women like Teresa Heinz Kerry.”

but what Mr NRO does NOT GET is that firefighters and cops are UNIONS and although STATE legislatures from BOTH parties won't mess with them, ALL agencies are suffering budget cuts due to drops in FEDERAL funding for their missions.....my karate teaching ex nephew (CHP, nieces former husband) is as macho, whitebread as they get and HE is voting for Kerry as are all the cops in his dept.

43. IAFF "Firefighters for Kerry" site.....great site supporting Kerry....
Edited on Wed Aug-04-04 06:33 PM by ElsewheresDaughter
http://www.firefightersforkerry.com/

letter from the general president of the IAFF:

Today there is a powerful new team for America. Senator John Kerry announced that he has asked Senator John Edwards of North Carolina to join his Team for a New America as his choice for Vice President.

John Kerry wanted a Vice President who could meet the challenges of our time, who was ready to be President, and who shared his vision and his values. He chose John Edwards, a proven leader and fighter for all Americans.

Fire Fighters across the nation know of the “two Americas” so often mentioned by John Edwards and the tough issues facing the middle class, because they have struggled with the high cost of health care, quality education for their children and the many challenges faced by working people in today’s economy.

John Edwards knows first hand of the struggles faced by working families. As the son of a mill worker, he learned at an early age of the importance of hard work and sacrifice for your family. He saw the need for justice for working and middle income families, to stand up and fight for decent pay, health care and benefits.

And John Edwards will work tirelessly along side John Kerry to build a stronger middle class in America, to protect our homeland, and to rebuild our image across the globe once again.

Senator Edwards has stood with Kerry as a co-sponsor for the IAFF Collective Bargaining Legislation and has been a champion for fire fighters in a Southern state that prohibits collective bargaining.

As a member of the Senate Intelligence committee and the Committee investigating 9/11, he understands what fire fighters confront as America’s first responders in the post-9/11 world, and he shares John Kerry’s vision of how to make America safer.

With this team, America’s fire fighters will have a voice and a team that’s on our side. Together, the Kerry-Edwards ticket will lead America toward a brighter future.

The IAFF now has a ticket to ride. For the Kerry-Edwards ticket to be successful, we will have to be vigilant in our efforts. Do your part to help the campaign. Make a contribution to the Kerry-Edwards campaign fund by visiting:

https://contribute.johnkerry.com/contribute.html/team=524

Thank you and God bless.

Harold A. Schaitberger

General President

6. Thx for posting, but beg to differ...
According to some recent DU threads, there is no difference between Bush and fellow-Bonesman Kerry. Kerry is just another Repuke-Lite that takes progressive votes for granted. Ergo, since Kerry has fooled so many of us, he certainly has the ability to fool Regular Guy (read "stupid") 1st responders. And THAT is the major flaw with NRO's analysis...

10. "Regular guys don't marry women like THK"
I'm sorry, that's bullshit.

Maybe most 'regular guys' (by which I assume he means blue-collar white men) don't run into a lot of women who grew up in Mozambique, but I don't think somehow that's what he's talking about, and I would just like to say that if I were a 'regular guy', I would find this whole piece really offensive, especially the implication that no 'regular guy' is capable of appreciating a woman who's not a doormat.

I mean really. The first show I ever got hooked on that featured a "regular guy" and his wife was *The Honeymooners.* If Alice Kramden went up against THK in a self-assertion contest I wouldn't want to place bets on who would win. Ditto with the Roseanne Barr show, the King of Queens, and a host of other popular TV shows featuring regular guys married to self-assertive, smart, even dare I say it opinionated women, and pretty much loving it. Is this just a vast pop-culture conspiracy, or does it suggest that perhaps the 'regular guy' might be capable of finding intelligence and independence of will attractive?

Criminy,

The Plaid Adder

19. Hardly Surprising
I decided to poke around the rest of the links on that blog entry including to the new advertisement. The only thing I can say is that it seems almost every detail both in the extended length of that 'Blog' which I now put in quotes because it reads more like a finely scripted advertisement that it is.

It has rarely been my opportunity to see such finely crafted horse-pucky in levels that high. The 'firefighter' he interviews sounds like he was plucked right out of the 1950s. The best way I can describe some of the 'connections' being made are akin to the way that conspiracy theorists make 'leaps of faith' in their beliefs to arrive at a potentially fallacious conclusion.

The example made by the firefighter though is likely the best for what I would call disconnected logic. He doesn't imply if regular men don't marry women like that because she's A) Rich B) Outspoken C) Starkly Independent D) A foreigner who sounds as though she may be German even though she hails from Mozambique or E) Is a Democrat. It seems more like the ramblings of a man who is going to vote Republican and is grasping at straws after having been egged on in the end.

22. The BS count and slant review
Now for the interesting little challenge, how many talking points were snuck into this article. I counted this way

Talking Points - 3

Digs - 11

Allusions - 4

Outright Lies - 2

Made up words Bonus - Libertinism

Mind you this is a quick count.

The writing itself is very negative with the only real praise being played to those who are for conservatism, suggesting that only Republcans can respect or believe in laws.

The only truths I saw in the whole little script was that Firefighters and Police do in general vote toward the conservatism side. It isn't because of law and order, instead it is deeply routed in psychology where both Firefighters and Police Officers tend toward conservative views due to the general instability of certain areas of thier life and the circumstances they often work in. They are our front line fighters in daily disasters and all too often this can color their views to being more inclined to beleive the fear and retoric that often is thrown forward by the conservative movement and those on the Right.

I can't imagine why anyone wants a "regular guy" in the White House anyway (not the bush and dick are remotely close to 'regular' in any way). My neighbor is what I'd call a "regular guy", works hard, drinks beer, has great barbecues. Helluva nice guy. I certainly don't want him running the country.

As for firefighter, I suspect most (union) firefighters and cops know how financially squeezed they've been for the last four years. They've gotten no support from this administration and I doubt the administration has got much support from them, no matter what they say.

32. Just yesterday the NYC Firefighters were yelling at Tom Ridge
Because the city hasn't gotten the money that Bush promised after 9/11. Since then they've been working without a contract and Bloomberg has shut down 6 or 8 (can 't remember exactly) fire houses in the city. Remember that they lost over 300 of their own on 9/11. I don't think very many NYC Firefighters will be voting for Bush when November rolls around.

The division created by Bush continues. This type of talk has no place in any workplace much less one where people count on each other so much. The author sounds like Anne Coulter's dream date. Uses the same type of hate language and sweeping generalizations. Another sad example of people who don't realize how bad Bush and company are screwing them. They're just listening to the soundbites and not paying attention to the actions. The proof is in the pudding but how do you get people to look in the pudding?

is he bragging on here? That he thinks its okay for the VP to tell a respected Senator to Go F*** himself? That chivalry? The manner in which he has insulted men who have no doubt saved lives and risked their own on a regular basis, just because they aren't perfect physical specimens? Is this his notion of chivalry?

I could go on, but this puke, if speaking for Dubya, has done so much harm with his words. They are getting desperate, folks.
