Flame away if you must, but...
Edited on Wed Aug-04-04 11:31 AM by skypilot
...the "Oy Yoy Yoy Show" has GOT to stop!

On edit: For those of you who can't hear Air America Radio, the "Oy Yoy Yoy Show" is a segment of the Al Franken Show where Franken's cohost reads him some recent news, usually bad, and he goes "Oy yoy yoy!" or simply "Oy!" and sometimes goes off on some goofy, irrelevant tangent.

1. no flames here
comedy is subjective, but that bit doesn't do anything for me at all, just like his imbecile wingnut friend Mark

or Janeane's aggressively ignorant daddy

2. I agree....I hate all the shtick on AAR...
From the Oy Oy Oy, to that one dudes Dream Diary on Morning Sedition, to that annoying bounce your boobies song on Randi Rhodes.

STOP! Just stop it all and talk about politics.

4. really.........Marc, give it UP!
and the other Mark........quit the clearly bogus laughter

what really irritates me about that stuff is that they cut off interesting guests in midsentence to go to that crap

they do it on ALL the shows, too, except, maybe Randi

mid sentence, I tell you!

that said, I listen to them all the time, as they've saved me from cable addiction

7. Franken has been doing that a lot lately.
Edited on Wed Aug-04-04 11:36 AM by skypilot
They could be interviewing someone who's talking--or rather, trying to talk-- about something really serious and Franken will keep interrupting to say something goofy.

18. I agree... I think he does this to try and lighten up
the interviews and segments, but what ends up happening is that you loose the intent of the interview, it backfires. Lets face it, politics for the masses can be very boring, so I think Al is trying to zip it up a bit. I think he should leave the funny stuff for its own segments, like the annoying, Oy, Oy, Oy, piece and keep it out of interviews.

My take on it. It is a new station and this radio talk show thing is new for Al. I believe it will improve and the kinks will be ironed out.

25. And some of those interviews do need lightening up but...
...I think that Al doesn't realized just how much he interrupts his guests sometimes. It's especially irritating because we all know that they have a limited time to say what they have to say before the show has to go to a commercial break.

Yeah, just talk politics and no hummor. Boy! That will bring in the ratings.

23. Be funny when talking about politics....
But enough with the repetetive shtick. Al is funny as hell just talking about things and riffing. And today on Unfiltered the guy they had with Rachel and Chuck was hysterical. But there was no canned shtick.

3. Been saying that since I first heard it...
it's dreadful and embarassing.

And let Katherine handle the interviews.

Franken's a great guy, but he just doesn't have a clue when things don't work. He's having a tough time filling a whole week with schtick, and too much of it really, really, sucks.

8. Thank you-this is part of the reason I like Franken's show so much
I don't need to hear screaming and yelling and the same old talking points spewed over and over as with RW radio. I hadn't listened to Morning Sedition until recently but they really are hitting their stride.

To all you naysayers-LIGHTEN UP and have a laugh, sounds like you could use it.

20. I agree - I love the oy oy oy show
it's part of the deal. they're using comedy and a sense of humor to beat the humorless hate screamers over the head and make them look like fools. This is the plan for the network and I think it's a good one. the program director for the network now is the woman who created the daily show! She had a good idea there and I think it will work here in the long run. I prefer it to the right-wing goon squad like Rush and insanity that are nothing but bile filled haters give me the oy oy oy show and pirate day and the dream diary and bouncing boobies! I'll take those any day of the week!!!

9. "Stop this record! Stop this record!"

We're Democrats. We are supposed to be accepting.

What I want to see stopped, are the HORRIBLE, AWFUL advertisements on AAR. I rarely listen to AAR just because I HATE commercials. Lousy one's especially. At least they don't have penis enlargement ads.

11. amen
Dave Orick is on now

I did listen long enough to say he makes his product in the US, so GOOD FOR HIM

those commercials are TOO fricking close together.

I mute em, then turn off the mute just in time for the next round of commercials

I got a timer and set it for three/four minutes. that usually works

I do not begrudge them their ads, though

they NEED to survive

14. Same here. Timer at the ready. But what good are ads, if
everyone tunes out. I'd willingly pay. It should be listener supported. And it would be far more effective with more time to talk. At least Malloy is kind enough to put people on hold, whereas Randi just cuts them off, usually.
And my biggest concern is that they are beholden to those who pay the bills.
Ah, screw it. We've got work to do. Any way we can do it it fine, at this point in time.

(is it "Oi Oi Oi?") - I especially love the commercials he does!

But, yes, the real commercials... that woman who answers the doorbell for the "You're that cable guy!" ad - I loathe that woman's voice.

24. that's the dumbest thing i've ever heard
if there are no advertisements there is no station! it's a testament to the popularity of the station that they have so many of those ads that you hate so much. if they didn't it would have to be subsidized and it would play right into the hands of the right-wing who say that liberal radio can't survive on it's own.

Let's make it boring and painful - the way liberal discussion should be. And let's get rid of those annoying commercials too - all they do is pay the frickin' bills.

Why do people make these HUGE LEAPS? I say that I don't like ONE segment on the show and suddenly that means I want ALL humor on AAR eradicated.

Edited on Wed Aug-04-04 12:26 PM by skypilot
I didn't call up AAR and tell Franken to stop doing the "Oy Yoy Yoy Show". That would have been obnoxious. I expressed an opinion on a message board. That's not the same as telling someone "what to do". And how is saying that you don't like a particular thing sounding like "a spoiled child". Everyone has his likes and dislikes. I say that I don't like ONE thing about Franken's show and I'm sounding like a spoiled child? Explain that to me.

21. Given Franken's great ratings right now
I'm inclined to disagree. Over time, he's adding new segments and enriching the broadcast for broad appeal. I think it's a good mix of serious and silly. Obviously, it's working. Maybe the Oy segment would be a good time for some to slip away for a break. Just a thought.

Edited on Wed Aug-04-04 12:27 PM by eleny
And I wasn't trying to imply that you thought that Oy will drag down ratings. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I am thinking that he's trying to have a very broad appeal and that's what makes his program so popular. It follows that there would be some segments that turn off a number of people. The Oy segment turns you off. But all in all, there's enough in there to satisfy a broad spectrum of listeners on the left.

Of course, you have a right to your opinion and personal taste. I find one of his other segments kind of annoying, so I often slip away to wash the breakfast dishes or make the bed. It keeps his show fresh and enjoyable for me. When I do find something particularly annoying, I send them an email and make a suggestion.
