Officials admit that computer files may have not been "updated"...
http://sg.news.yahoo.com/040804/1/3m6sd.html

<snip>
Senior government and intelligence officials interviewed by The New York Times described the computer files sent from Pakistan as discreet documents, each at least 20 pages long and devoted to a particular target.

They said the most intriguing detail was that they were written in "perfect English," leading to the conclusion that its author was "obviously someone who has lived an extensive period of time in the West, exceptionally professional, exceptionally meticulous."

A senior White House official said one computer file had been modified in January and included a photograph of a building, which he did not identify other than to say it was one of the five presumably targeted financial institutions.

The officials acknowledged, however, that they had not been able to assess the significance of the modification; whether it had been updated with new photographs or whether the computer file was simply opened and closed recently.

2. OK, I have a serious question.
If these guys are Islamic terrorists why would the files be written in "perfect English"?

4. Didn't you read the article? It's because
"obviously someone who has lived an extensive period of time in the West, exceptionally professional, exceptionally meticulous." If they said it, it must be true. Now stop being un-american and get that plastic sheeting up on your windows.

3. Gee, can't they look at the backup?

Just kidding. (I hope.)

Somehow the fact that these were written in perfect English makes me wonder they're planted. I wouldn't trust the Pakistanis one inch.

The thing dissolves like spit on a griddle. It is not so much that these people are liars, it is that they are not even competent liars.

There is no, repeat, no, substance to this current effort at panic-mongering. There is not one iota of new information, not one scrap of real indication an operation is currently underway to attack these bally-hooed targets. Indeed, if there were, the last thing a competent security service would do would be to publicize their knowledge.

This thing is nothing but a blatant attempt to distort the normal process of the Presidential election. Its first purpose is to crowd out discussion of other matters in the media; that is viewed as even more important to these "Mayberry Machiavellis" than spreading panic in the populace, in the hope people will cling in their distress to "a strong leader."

There are encouraging signs the people, if not the media, are on to the game. The barrage of previous phony scare attempts have conditioned people to take this sort of swill with a shakerful of salt. The timing of these cries of wolf are so predictable that they reveal their purpose even to the unobservant in this political season. Though call-in polls are no scientific indicator, it remains instructive that a recent one on CNN found a majority agreeing with the proposition this latest warning was motivated by politics rather than a genuine security effort.

"Stupid men do stupid things, and desperate men do desperate things. We are in for a desperately stupid summer."

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

7. There are few things less reliable than a file's modification date
There are a whole number of reasons why a file's modification date might get changed OTHER than somebody editing the file.
