Representative Tom DeLay of Texas needs to be stopped. He is at the center of machine that launders corporate influence in our political process. And now his machine is at the center of investigations by a grand jury in Texas and the House Ethics Committee in Washington into ethics violations and criminal activity.

But the DeLay racket reaches even into the Ethics Committee itself. We must act now to make sure the job gets done right.

Four of the five Republicans on the House Ethics Committee, which will review the charges against DeLay next month, have received over $35,000 from an arm of the DeLay operation. They are in no position to conduct an independent investigation.

The charges against DeLay filed in the Ethics Committee include trading favors for contributions, laundering illegal corporate contributions to influence Texas legislative races, and improperly directing the Department of Homeland Security to conduct a political witch hunt against Texas Democrats.

Tom DeLay has done more than any other person to construct a system where our representatives sell the privilege of writing legislation to the highest bidder. His contempt for his opponents and win-at-all-costs approach pollute our political life -- and may have broken the law.

Here's what I wrote

Rep. Tom Delay's corrupt political money machine, his militant contempt towards his opponents, and his win-at-all-costs approach to politics are poison to our democracy.

For the sake of our democracy and rule of law, the House Ethics Committee must hold Tom Delay, dubbed "chief enforcer of company contributions to Republicans," accountable for his ethic violations and any broken laws. Because 4 out of 5 Republicans on the House Ethics Committee, have conflicts of interest with this case, the committee should appoint an independent investigator or outside counsel to properly investigate in a nonpartisan manner the charges of ethic violations, broken laws, and abuse of power against Rep Tom Delay.
