This woman may be totally bereft of any moral integrity whatsoever, but so is the mis-administration that, at the very least, coerced her into doing what she did.

I don't want to see these seven take the fall for the abuse that was endemic to our inexcusably poorly executed and clueless "occupation."

25. A sad young woman from rural West Virginia

Please note I'm not knocking West Virginia per se, but you have to know that this woman probably isn't a real seasoned, sophisticated world traveler. She doesn't know much beyond what's required of her to function in her small home town (as is pretty common with small town and large city people alike). She's been told all her life that America is Great and Good, and trained to obey her superiors.

Well, we sent her out from West Virginia, filled with misunderstandings about where she was going, what she was supposed to do when she got there, why she was there, and a hundred other things. Unfortunately for her, she was prominently featured in a number of photographs, easily identified, and in the sexist culture that still pervades the military, a woman.

I certainly think she needs to be prosecuted, but the military and its civilian authorities that misled this young woman bear the greater guilt.

I won't defend her. There are many troops who took the same wink-nudge orders from the brass and did not commit atrocities. But that doesn't mean that she gets all the blame, or the brass gets a pass for issuing wink-nudge orders to "soften up" detainees.

Of course she couldn't have picked a better time to be preggers. If this gets her any sympathy the cramps will've been worth it.

29. A walking metaphor

Maybe it's my ruby port talking, but this strikes me as a perfect metaphor for the current administration. Everyday people, dragged into unusual situations, acting only the way they know how, and being excoriated in the media for it. This makes me incredibly sad.

Low income people being made to suffer for the incompetence and evil of their upper income superiors (not that I'm in any way excusing what she herself engaged in).
Argh.
