Whatever happened to Democrats being for civil rights?
In a thread in LBN, there's a discussion about a woman (in the US) who was fired from her job for eating "unclean" meat (pork: the one you love!) by a boss who made his personal religious beliefs into unwritten corporate policy.

There are a few people who are saying that this is wrong, but a disturbingly large number of people who say it's OK for an employer to impose religious dietary laws upon all employees, and fire them if they sin, despite the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

What's up with that? If it was a Fundie Christian doing this, ALL of DU would be up in arms about it. Does Islam have some kind of special protection that I don't know about????

1. I would hope that all faiths are treated equally in this country
and that there is seperation of church and state. Most employers abide by the Civil Rights Act and do not discriminate.

BTW, just curious-did the LBN thread say the employer was Muslim? I'm asking because there are some Christian sects that also forbid the eating of pork (Seventh Day Adventists), Hindus don't eat pork, and Jews don't eat pork.

3. They have been muted by the Political Correctness mantra.
It is no longer in vogue to be on the side of justice for fear of being called on PC. They are very good at what they do.

5. *sigh* you're not joking
I didn't even click on that because I just had this sinking feeling it would make my head spin. What to say. You can't fire somebody in America if they don't follow your religious beliefs. You just can't.

Why don't some people get it? Reaganism. They've been raised on business is god philosophy and I guess never knew what it was like to have employee or consumer rights.

Sad sad sad. For anybody to think it's okay for your boss to tell you what to eat. Speechless.
