Genocide in Somalia...who cares?
Edited on Wed Aug-04-04 10:59 PM by Isere
While we are obsessing about Theresa Heinz Kerry and whether she is Evita incarnate, a full-blown GENOCIDE is occurring in Somalia.

Did you see The NewsHour tonight? Did you see Charley Rangel looking like a stroke victim as he told the tale of the disaster that has befallen the Somalis?

Haven't we gone down this path before and haven't we felt ashamed?

Please, everyone, call your representatives tomorrow. Call the White House, call the press.

Never again!!!!!

Never again!!!!

The Lost War --- Three Million Lives Lost since 1998
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=616751

There will be no peace in Africa until this is addressed

International arms trade $800 billion annually - largest business in the world.

Twice the second placed - illegal sale of drugs $400 billion a year

82 armed conflicts between 1989-1999 - 79 took place within national borders - arms not needed for self defense.

Reality is most arms are used on ordinary people by forces in the government or close to it.

159 wars fought since WWII - 9 out of 10 in developing world - more than 20 million people - were civilians.

War brings starvation - Biafra, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Chad, Sudan, Liberia and Somalia.

Until there is a radical reassessment of the arms trade and its consequences, millions more will be directly or indirectly killed by this lethal business.

The bottom line is that there is a lot of money to be made in weapons, and this motivates arms manufacturing.

To add to high profit margins, all arms manufactures are heavily subsidized and protected by their governments.

Free trade agreements - nearly always exempt from military spending

Industrialized countries will always be able to subsidies their corporations through defense contracts and grants for weapons research.

2. Somalia too?
I've seen so little about Somalia recently (indeed, the last I heard of it was a piece on someone trying to establish a Coca-Cola franchise). All I can fin in the news in the last couple of days is this non-specific comment:
"Somalia, a failed Arab state beset by interclan anarchy, continues to mistreat its black citizens." (http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36~418~2312159,00.html)
and these articles:
A free-for-all country: Somalia will languish until its people own it
Somalis’ suffering: until when?
We Want Prosperity, Not a Lofty 'Greater Somalia'
which say the place is still pretty chaotic, but there are peace talks at the moment.

Have you any links as to who is carrying out the genocide?

3. I meant to say Sudan and not Somalia!
So sorry about the stupid mistake! Too many martinis...
I woke up in the middle of the night and realized my mistake, but the time for editing has expired. My mix-up reminds me of Bush's confusion between Iran and Iraq.

Mea culpa.
