Hicks and Habib torture claims genuine, lawyers say
August 5, 2004
CLAIMS of torture and abuse of two Australians detained by the US at Guantanamo Bay were genuine, lawyers for the terrorist suspects said.
The lawyers said today there was no reason to doubt the allegations of three Britons released from the US military base in Cuba that Australians David Hicks and Mamdouh Habib had been abused by their captors.
The government said it remained happy for US authorities to investigate the claims – a stance described by Hicks' lawyer as akin to Adolf Hitler reviewing abuse allegations at Nazi camps during World War II.
Hicks, an Adelaide-born former jackeroo, and Habib, a Sydney father-of-four, have been detained by the US at Guantanamo Bay for more than two years.
