Outspoken Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz was curiously quiet yesterday about a report linking the pro-Israel hawk with an Arab woman. Wolfowitz's foes were agog to read in Britain's Daily Telegraph that he has been quietly dating Shaha Ali Riza, a Mideast expert with the World Bank.


Riza was born in Tunisia, grew up in Saudi Arabia and, like neocon Wolfowitz, is divorced.


The pair are said to rarely demonstrate affection publicly. According to an acquaintance, "Most people would never guess there was a relationship, even if they saw them together."


The strange bedfellows are said to share a commitment to Arab democracy. Neither Wolfowitz nor Riza returned calls.
