Sounds Like Iraq is Blowing Up All Over Today
Just out on New York Post and the situation is really not good. AlSadr and his men have declared "revolution" against the occupiers and fighting has broken out in at least four cities.

What a mess! And what the hell are we doing mixed up in it.

Amerika love all OUR "NewFreedom" that the Emperor has bequeathed to us...

They love Der Okkupying Fuhrer as much as we do!

5. What ever became of Bremer?
He just kind of dropped out of sight completely. Made a mad dash for the plane and was gone.

Yea, the bad part is we started the whole thing. Well, "we" didn't. About 4 men in and around the WH actually started it. Now they will all bail and we will be stuck trying to figure what the hell to do.

The thing that makes me feel worse than anything is that the women all over the Middle East are the ones who will lose. The radicals will win in the end - there are too many of them.

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/iraq/la-080504najaf_lat,1,7965772.story?coll=la-home-headlines

NAJAF, Iraq — Heavy clashes erupted in this holy city today after a string of attacks by followers of radical cleric Muqtada Sadr, shattering a two-month-old cease-fire and sparking Sadr's Mahdi Army militia to rise up in at least three other cities, including the capital.

Among the dead were eight Iraqis — including five police officers — and one U.S. soldier, whose convoy was attacked just outside of Najaf with rocket-propelled grenades. At least a dozen Sadr militants were killed.

It marked the fiercest fighting in southern Iraq since early June,

It started in Vietnam, situation normal, fucked up beyond all recognition.

They used it in "Saving Private Ryan" about WWII. Factually innacurate?

29. I first encountered it in college around 1964-65
So it's definitely pre-Vietnam. World War II sounds very likely -- I'm almost positive SNAFU is World War II, and FUBAR is the intensive form of SNAFU.

I guess it depends on which generation you are from, which war you think the term came from. It will probably turn out that the Crusaders used the term 500 years ago. (Just kidding)

Thanks for the info.

10. CNN Int. interviewed reporter Ken Dilanian of the Philly Inquirer today...
who apparently has made a point of doing "positive" stories about Iraq. The point of his appearance was to say that on his current visit to Iraq any positive news there was "irrelevant." He said the combination of the insurgency, and things like lack of electricity, rendered the situation entirely negative. Asked what could turn things around, he said that everybody says it's for Iraqis to be responsible for their own security, but he seemed to have little hope for that happening.

You're absolutely right, MaryH, it's a mess -- and I guess we're "mixed up in it" because the Bush cabal was going to have regime-change in Iraq come hell or high water. I've heard of no high water, but hell has apparently arrived.

12. The reporters in Iraq that have been on Lehrer
lately have not been very optimistic. They still can't report because it's too dangerous to be outside. So you know things are just horrible.

I wonder if Iraq might just disappear and several countries will come out of it. Or if Iraq might end up being part of Iran. It would not be out of the questions. Aren't most people in Iran Shiia?

I just cannot believe that Bush and boys could have been so stupid. Even I knew better than to get messed up in the NearEast - just from what I saw on the news. How the hell could they have missed it!

They couldn't. That's the answer. They were just so arrogant!
Well, pride goes before the fall. Too bad so many people died because of it. I wonder if any of those guys ever think about the dead people? Probably not. It would surprise me if they did.

15. Three separate countries
The civil war has started, and Iraq which was a british conglomeration will go back to what it was. The kurds will conrol the oil rich north, which isn't going to go over well with Turkey at all. The Sunnis's will control the middle of the country and the Shiite the south.
Whether the Shia will align with Iran remains to be seen, but it's likely.

I guess, "Mission Accomplished", was a misinterpretation by the "liberal" media.

21. I weep for my fellow veterans
I weep for my fellow veterans who are being asked to lay down their lives for a lie. I weep for my country because the sacrifice of they are making is not broadcast on the national news. We do not see that in August, two soliders a day have died. Do they believe that silence will easy the ache in the hearts of the mother who will not be able to talk to their sons again? That the children of the dead will not grow up and wonder what their fathers have died for and why they never got the chance to know them.

34. Welcome Flood
:hi:

I lived through the Vietnam era and watching the run-up to this invasion was like watching a train wreck about to happen in slow motion. Millions of protesters (not the kind who protest ANY military action) were in the streets, including me.

Bush had warnings from everyone, including his generals not to do it. Bush's own father wrote a book in the 1990's explaining what it would be insanity to attempt to occupy Iraq. George didn't listen. He said God told him to do it.

Bush is an ignorant, corrupt, insipid, partyboy who has as much business being commander in chief as Goldie Hawn.

The media play along on this thing is ghastly. They now rarely even mention the soldiers dying and being maimed, after they cheer led the U.S. into the invasion.

It is beyond disgusting.

28. The Democrats must do a better job of ralling the Veterans
I went to the John Edwards rally in Memphis, TN yesterday. That man inspires me. I had my daughters on my shoulders so they could get a look at him. The heat index was 108 and we stood out there for nearly two hours but it was one of the most inspirational moments of my life. My wife has a friend whose husband got back from Iraq in March and now he is returning on the 16th of this month. He is in the National Guard. I find it funny that Bush avoided service in Vietnam by joining the National Guard but he sure is quick to send them to Iraq. He was injured twice in Iraq and I wonder what kind of benefits is he going to get? Will our patriotic President be willing to give him the medical benefits that he deserves? The character of our nation is determined by how we treat those who have sacrificed their hearts and souls for the freedom that we enjoy. We don't always have a great record on this look at the returning veterans of World War I, Korea, Vietnam. The one example that we do have was World War II. Roosevelt knew that it was important to make sure that those who served were taking care of. We must fight for the vets. We must hold both republicans and democrats accountable.
