AWOL definition fits; Ignorance doesn't clear Bush of AWOL
Edited on Thu Aug-05-04 04:34 PM by mrsuomela
Former Reagan Assistant Secretary of Defense Lawrence Korb dismissed contentions today that Bush wasn’t really AWOL because his commanding officers must have known he never completed five months of training.

“If the commanders ignore it, that’s their problem,” Korb said. “That doesn’t change that you’rre absent without leave.”

He cited a Wednesday Wall Street Journal article, too, as a clear example that Bush was AWOL. The article noted that guardsmen are considered absent without leave even if they don’t show up for one training without permission in advance.

The point, he noted, was that one doesn’t have to be charged with being AWOL to be considered AWOL, and whether or not action is taken by the Guard, the guardsman is still considered AWOL
