I have put together a chart comparing Bush approval numbers to the timeline of terror alerts. (Thanks to Stuart Eugene Thiel for his amazing daily graphics that he prepares, comparing the approval ratings from different polls. )You can see it by clicking in the graphic below:

There are few things that are quite evident from the chart:

- Whenever his ratings dip, there's a new terror alert.

- Every terror alert is followed by a slight uptick of Bush approval ratings.

- As we approach the 2004 elections, the number and frequency of terror alerts keeps growing, to the point that they collapse in the graphic. At the same time, Bush ratings are lower than ever.

a plethora of alerts between now and November. Alerts, attacks, captures of "evil doers" that they've had on ice for months....it's all going to come fast and furious. Gird your loins.

4. I like one element of the pattern:

the effects of the alerts are dampening. He's getting less and less of a bounce each day, which totally kicks ass. This once-mighty weapon of his is now nearly impotent.

The alert concerns the purchase of bears similar to the one pictured above by a man at a Stevenson Ranch, California, Wal-Mart.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- The FBI has issued an alert to 350 law enforcement agencies in the southwest and Salt Lake City for potential Valentine teddy bear bombs after a suspicious transaction at a Wal-Mart last month.

Law enforcement sources said authorities also were on the alert at airports in case the suspected bear-bombs might be carried onto airplanes on Valentine's Day.

That was an amazing amount of work and it's distilled so nicely in that chart. You can really see how, when in trouble, they pull this card out of their back pocket.

If business people saw this chart they would question their support for this fool. After all, these warnings have a negative impact on business.

24. I showed this to another friend, who brought up a great point...

that the alerts aren't right on the lowest points, but rather whenever the line starts to decline. That's even more telling: they're trying like crazy to keep that balloon in the air.
