Fox correspondent confirmed leaker...why can't Novak?

Investigators Concluded Shelby Leaked Message
Justice Dept. Declined To Prosecute Case

By Allan Lengel and Dana Priest
Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, August 5, 2004; Page A17

Federal investigators concluded that Sen. Richard C. Shelby (R-Ala.) divulged classified intercepted messages to the media when he was on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, according to sources familiar with the probe.

Specifically, Fox News chief political correspondent Carl Cameron confirmed to FBI investigators that Shelby verbally divulged the information to him during a June 19, 2002, interview, minutes after Shelby's committee had been given the information in a classified briefing, according to the sources, who declined to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the case.

1. What information was Shelby leaking to the media?

Whatever it was, this is BS that the Justice Dept isn't prosecuting this case. The repug's have accused Dem's of leaking information for years (remember all the "we can't trust Congress" crap from Raygun?).

3. IIRC, the exact quotes used by terrorists
who were talking to each other about the upcoming attack on 9/11. By quoting them, he let the terrorists know exactly who it was that was being spied on, giving them the opportunity to find another means of communication

6. Shelby leaked the fact that CIA had an untranslated message
recieved on 9/10/01 that the terrorists would strike the next day.

It wasn't translated until the day after the attacks.

The embarassing nature of the memo to Buxh and Co probably explains why it was classified to begin with and why Fox is so willing to give up the leaker.

4. THIS
"Now consider this news report, from page A17 of Thursday's Washington Post: "Federal investigators concluded that Sen. Richard C. Shelby, R-Ala., divulged classified intercepted messages to the media when he was on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, according to sources familiar with the probe." The report goes on to say that Shelby disclosed the contents of two messages intercepted just before the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks but not translated until Sept. 12. One of them said, "Tomorrow is zero hour."

5. Wait, is this the same information that Flush fatboy attributed to
Senator Leaky (as R.L. called him), A.K.A. Senator Leahy?

Oh, and by the way, didn't Shelby go to Iraq in January 1990 with Arlen Spector and come back with a glowing report of his meeting with Saddam Hussein?

"I was accompanied by my distinguished colleague from Alabama, Senator Richard Shelby" - Arlen Spector

"Ours was the first congressional delegation in several years to meet with President Saddam Hussein of Iraq. He is an imposing figure who exudes strength and confidence, which would be expected from a leader whose nation has recently emerged with the upper hand from an 8-year war with Iran.

Our discussions were cordial and candid. When I suggested his participation in regional security and peace talks with Israel, President Saddam Hussein responded that he needed to first concentrate on peace between Iraq and Iran, but he did not rule out Iraqi participation in regional meetings.

President Saddam Hussein expressed concern and annoyance that the United States specifically limits the number of Soviet Jewish immigrants in order to force them to go to Israel. I told him politely but firmly that he was misinformed--that the United States placed limits on immigrants from all nations. I added that as the son of Russian Jews, I had, in part, successfully opposed such restrictions in the Senate.

As this was my first meeting with President Sadam Hussein, we did not cover every sensitive issue. However, a substantive dialog was opened. Given his misapprehension regarding United States immigration policy, there is an obvious need for more contracts by the United States with Iraqi officials. I hope to meet with him again, and I urge my Senate colleagues to do the same. "
